HELP US OUT! GRAPEVINE GROUP RAISES FUNDS AND AWARENESS FOR PREVENTION IN THE MACKAY DISTRICT Some facts... Suicide is the leading cause of death globally and known as Australia s silent killer. Every day at least 7 Australians die by suicide and 178 attempt suicide, half of whom require hospitalisation as a result. IN AUSTRALIA... Suicide is the leading cause of dealth for men and women under the age of 34 years Suicide is the leading cause of dealth for men under the age of 44 years Suicide costs our nation over $17 billion every year Suicide claims one life ever three or four hours Every year there are more deaths from suicide than there are road accidents 1 in 17 Australians will consider suicide this year Suicide is still considered a taboo subject and surrounded by stigma and shame which is preventing people from seeing assistance or discussing the issue The gay population has a 11 x greater risk The indigenous community has more double the risk of the non-indigenous population Regional and rural areas are at greater risk There are often warning signs for suicide and the more people of aware of them the more can be done to prevent self-harm There are resources available to assist but often it is only when the issue of suicide is at a crisis point that help is sort. Identifying suicide warning signs and finding appropriate assistance can save lives. What Grapevine Group thought about this... Many of Grapevine Group s founding members have worked within media and advertising. After personal experience they identified one of the major issues surrounding awareness of suicide prevention resources in the Mackay community was the huge lack of publicity surrounding suicide. This is due to strict media guidelines which are in place to prevent copycat suicides. Suicide is not able to be reported on often or as easily as other issues, and as such our community is unaware of the extent of the problem, where to find assistance or the suicide warning signs that friends and family may be exhibiting. With more deaths attributed nationally to suicide than the road toll, suicide is publicly discussed far less often than topics of equal concern and for that reason community awareness is limited to the gossip grapevine. People hear of a tragedy but not of the resources available to assist. With your support Grapevine Group would like to change this for Mackay! Grapevine Group Assoc Inc is a locally founded grassroots volunteer group who raise funds and awareness for suicide prevention and awareness in the Mackay District. Grapevine Group relies entirely on community support and we have operated since 2004. Thanks to community support we have funded hundreds of local people through suicide awareness intervention training, including police officers and high school teachers, and distributed thousands of District Suicide Support Cards. Grapevine Group is auspiced by YIRS One Stop Youth Shop Inc. and operates joint local suicide prevention projects. Our current campaign to Make Mackay the more suicide-safe regiona in Australia is heavily supported by the Daily Mercury. To achieve the campaign goal we offer free suicide alertness training to local sports and welcome other participants to attend safetalk suicide alertness training. Due to needed restrictions in the media too many people will hear of a tragedy along the gossip grapevine and not of the resources available to them. Grapevine Group intends to change that! what we do... 1. Our WEBSITE has a concise list of local suicide support resources for the Mackay District to be able to fi nd assistance for themselves or for friends and family they are concerned about. Check out www.grapevinegroup.org.au 2. We distribute this vital list on HELP-A-MATE DISTRICT SUPPORT RESOURCE CARDS to Mackay and at local events 3. We present Livingworks safetalk PREVENTION TRAINING for the general public 4. We fundraise to provide FREE AWARENESS WORKSHOPS to local coaches, captains and sports volunteers through our HELP-A-MATE GRAPEVINE SPORTS CHALLENGE 5. We fundraise to train more Grapevine Volunteers to become LIVINGWORKS PRESENTERS with safetalk or ASIST qualifications 5. We promote the need for more PUBLICTY of our local resources and the need for more suicide prevention and intervention trainers and training in the district through the media, our facebook site and enewsletters. 6. We distribute the latest Mental Health and Suicide MEDIA GUIDELINES to local media and the resource sector to encourage more publicity about the issue of suicide and the resources available. 7. We welcome you using the front of the card to promote an event, your club or your organisation. Your $250 contribution will fund printing of the cards as well as allow us to sponsor 2 sport volunteers through safetalk suicide alertness training. SPONSOR safetalk suicide alertness training places for sports volunteers $50 per place Our HELP-A-MATE Sports Challenge offers free safetalk suicide alertness training for the Mackay sports community. You can help us out by adopting a participant through the program and build vital skills for our community to become suicide safe. ENCOURAGE YOUR MEMBERS AND STAFF TO PARTICIPATE in suicide prevention training DISPLAY our HELP-A-MATE Sports Challenge Poster Let more people know about Grapevine Group and let Sports Volunteers know there is free training available to them. PROMOTE your organisation or event or distribute District Suicide Support Cards If you are having an event why not have District Suicide Support Cards promote it and let everyone know about resources and positive local activities. If needed we will do our best to source a sponsor to get the cards produced. FUND or BECOME a Livingworks suicide prevention presenter Only a handful of suicide prevention trainers exist in the Mackay District and as a community we desperately need more. The cost to become a Livingworks safetalk presenter is $1000 plus travel expenses. To qualify as a Livingworks ASIST presenter the cost is $3500 plus travel. If you would like to undertake the training or know more please contact Grapevine Group.
