About Kick start your morning and recognize Mental Health Week at Mindful Mornings on Wednesday, May 8, 2019. The breakfast event features speakers who will share stories about their personal experiences with mental health. Together, we can create positive conversations and decrease stigma in our community. The Cause One in five people in Canada will personally experience a mental health problem or illness, according to the Canadian Mental Health Association, and access to support services is crucial. When local mental health care providers work together, as Carizon and Grand River Hospital do, individuals and families in our community are able to get the help they need when they need it. Mindful Mornings is a collaboration between Carizon and Grand River Hospital Foundation. Proceeds will support the greatest needs in their mental health programs, helping many people and families in our community. Carizon (programs and services) helps families when life is tough. Specializing in children s mental health, counselling, and community services, Carizon s mental health and wellbeing programs range from early intervention and prevention to intensive trauma treatment services. We believe that when we help families manage life s challenges, we create a healthy and vibrant community for all. Grand River Hospital is the largest hospital in Waterloo Wellington, providing a range of emergency, inpatient and outpatient mental health services for children, youth, adults and seniors. Most services are based on ages and conditions. We want to instill hope and foster recovery for people who have a mental illness as well as their families. By working together these partners are able to address local mental health needs and ensure our community has a variety of services close to home. www.mindfulmornings.ca
Highlights from 2018 Mindful Mornings had incredible success in its inaugural year. We have a community that cares and the support from attendees, corporate sponsors and volunteers demonstrated that together, we can make a difference. The event featured singer, songwriter and mental health advocate, Steven Page. His compelling talk had a meaningful message as he passionately spoke of his struggles with depression and his daily journey of living with mental health issues. Together we can work to remove the stigma around mental health at work and at home. The sold out event left the audience energized and inspired to keep the positive conversation going. Mindful Mornings was featured in Waterloo Region Record and promoted in Exchange Magazine and Snap d. 2019 Guest Speakers Michael Landsberg Michael Landsberg has been a prominent face and voice on the Canadian sports scene since 1984. With his unique style, he quickly became one of this country's most polarizing personalities- perceived by some as forthright and others as arrogant. In 2009 people began to agree more on Michael after he publicly shared his, then decade long, struggle with severe depression and anxiety. Since then, he has become one of this country's loudest voices- pushing for all Canadians to see mental illness as a sickness, not a weakness. Michael frequently used his platform as producer and host of Off the Record on TSN to change people's opinion of mental illness. Michael has been an official spokesperson for Bell Let's Talk Day since that initiative was launched. In 2015 Michael launched his own initiative, a charity called SickNotWeak. Jennifer Hedger anchors the 10 p.m. ET edition of TSN S SPORTSCENTRE, providing viewers with all the day s highlights from the world of sports. A mainstay on TSN since 2002, Hedger s popularity transcends sports and she has quickly become a fan favourite in both the sports and entertainment communities. Born and raised in London Ontario, Hedger attended Western University. It was during her studies at UWO that she sought help for depression and anxiety. It was not an easy ask. Hedger has battled mental health issues her entire life and gives an honest perspective on being a public person who lives with depression. She is a proud member of the SickNotWeak Community, and after years of keeping her battles private, she is now speaking out. By telling her own story, Hedger hopes to inspire others to work together to break the stigma of mental illness. Jennifer Hedger Corey Hirsch As a former National Hockey League goaltender, Corey Hirsch had a professional hockey career which spanned 13 years, playing or dressing in over 300 NHL games, making stops in New York, Vancouver, Washington and Dallas. Hirsch is known for his performance at the 1994 Olympics for Team Canada, earning Canada a silver medal and forcing a shootout in the gold medal game against Sweden. During his NHL career, Corey would be plagued with debilitating panic attacks and obsessive thoughts, until he finally confided in a team trainer. Due to the stigma surrounding mental health struggles, Corey hid his illness from teammates until he eventually saw a psychiatrist and was diagnosed with OCD. Corey published his personal story in the Players Tribune, and continues to be an outspoken advocate by sharing his struggles with mental health while playing in the NHL. www.mindfulmornings.ca
