Time for Some Energy! 4

Three Questions to ponder as we talk about the Pathways model and our supporting research Is our health care system looking at the right data?? Is active participation in ones healing process cost effective?? What is the value of a Pathways in every community??

The greatest discovery of our generation is that human beings, by changing the inner attitudes of their minds, can change the outer aspects of their lives. William James

Evaluative Research What are the benefits? 16

NYT article: How Measurement Fails US We suffer from measurement fatigue!! Data gathering and mining take more time and resources than patient care with little effect on outcomes. We need to determine and appreciate all the factors that contribute to outcomes.

Initial Research Projects at Pathways Objectives: -To describe the expectations, experiences and perceived benefits of educational offerings, group events and one-on-one sessions provided at Pathways as perceived by participants. -To determine the extent to which Pathways participants share their use of complementary therapies with their physicians.

Results 90% agreement: I have a resource to use when I need it; I feel more hopeful, more positive about my situation; I have more control over my life; My quality of life is enhanced; I am more at peace; 80% Felt More spiritually connected, More supported, More connected with others, Less anxious Over 65% of participants discussed their participation in complementary services at Pathways with their physicians. 61% of physicians were supportive 10% somewhat negative; 4% very negative

Healing is not the same thing as curing. It is not getting rid of disease, but the balancing, integrating, and expanding of ones way of being regardless (but often because) of the experience of a disease.

Volunteering at Pathways: Spiritual Intelligence in Action Objective: Describe the demographics and motivations of those who volunteer at Pathways. Results: A belief in Pathways mission A belief in a holistic approach to illness An opportunity to give back and make a difference

Provider Research Impact of Volunteering Bowling Alone by Robert Putnum Social Capital altruism, volunteering and philanthropy is decreasing in the US Spiritual Intelligence by Dana Zohar Spiritual Capital a vision and model for organizational and cultural sustainability; Capital amassed through serving, reflecting our shared values, vision, and purpose in life Immune Power Personality by Henry Dreher Increase in immunity and resistance to disease from: 1) personal 2)regular basis 3) strangers 4) let go of the outcome

Pathways To Healing: Person-Centered Responses to Complementary Services Most recent research study, we asked: What are the perceived changes in quality of life measures related to participation in complementary services at Pathways? 23

I often compare getting a serious diagnosis to landing in a foreign country needing to learn the language and learn it well because your life may depend on it. Pathways is the map - the dictionary - the guidebook to the language whatever your new language may be. It s the place where you re accepted - comforted - touched - listened to. It is peaceful. It is caring. It is hope. Pathways Participant 33
