The LAP tool, short questionnire to ssess the likelihood of womn being killed by her buser, ws fetured in n investigtive report on Februry 22. Since inititing the tool in June 2009, Rose Brooks Center hs provided services to n dditionl 798 womn (3x the nticipted volume) who were determined by the police deprtment to be t risk of being killed. Rose Brooks Center s Children s Progrm is one of the things tht set us prt from other gencies. Our commitment to breking the cycle of domestic violence demnds specil ttention be pid to children who hve experienced buse. Often children of domestic violence find difficulty expressing themselves. Our counselors use lterntive methods tht suit ech unique child; sometimes through ply, rt therpy, sports nd hobbies. Therpists help children del with the trum experienced by witnessing violence nd work to find wy for fmilies to prepre for life fter buse. In ddition to their work with kids, our stff provide guidnce to mothers who need help rebuilding their reltionships with their children. He nd his mother fled their buser nd their home in Mexico, but Jose s mother didn t know to bring with her the documents needed for her fmily to become legl citizens. During his sty t shelter, KC Art Institute (KCAI) interns were beginning their work on the Frewell Forest. Ech time they sw him they sked him to prticipte, to dd his touch to the wll. Finlly, Jose picked up pintbrush. It only took moment to recognize his tlent. Jose s niml pintings re true works of rt. The KCAI students were so impressed by Jose s tlent, they invited him on tour of the rt institute where he met professionl rtists nd lerned how to strt his own portfolio.
