Fees and Course Requirements The cost of the comprehensive course is $3500.00 and payable to Balanced Body University. You may register online at http://bbu.pilates.com/. You are required to fill out an application in order to be accepted into the program. Please submit the application directly to Core Conditioning, Attn: Linda Gallagher at our Burbank location. The manuals are $50.00 per module and may be purchased from Balanced Body or from our facility. The program includes a formal lecture series and apprenticeship. A certificate of completion is awarded to those who complete a minimum of 144 hours of formal lectures, 305 hours of apprenticeship, and pass the written and practical exams. PMA Membership The $3500 course fee includes a 1-year membership to the Pilates Method Alliance. Students will be offered a discounted price on all Pilates sessions throughout the lecture series. This remains in effect until 3 months after the written exam is taken. This is to help you financially as you work to complete your apprenticeship hours. We require that 40 of your Self-Practice hours be in the form of group classes, private sessions, duets or equipment classes taught by a comprehensively trained teacher at Core or at an approved facility. Prerequisites Certain aspects of the course are physically demanding, and require that students be in good physical condition in order to benefit fully from the instruction. Therefore, we request that the following be observed: 30 hours of previous Pilates experience (20 of which must be within the last 12 weeks) in the form of group classes, private instruction or equipment classes, prior to participating in the program. We insist that a minimum of 4 private sessions be taken with an education staff member at Core Conditioning, 2 of which must be prior to the first lecture. Students will be offered a discounted price of $50.00 per private Pilates session throughout the lecture series. This remains in effect until 3 months after the written exam is taken. Pre-training Workshop (designed to assist your completion of the above recommended hours) Core Conditioning will be presenting a pre-training workshop on the following dates: Sat Aug 4 (11:30am-7pm) and Sunday Aug 5 (9am-5pm) This is a valuable introduction to the essential elements and principals of Pilates and will cover Beginning Mat and Beginning Reformer. The focus will be on experiencing the work as a student, as opposed to a teacher-to-be. You may apply these 16 hours to your required prerequisite hours. The cost of this workshop is $395.00. (You may register early for a reduced rate of $325.00. Payment must be received by July 20, 2007 for the early bird rate). About Our Program At Core Conditioning, we are dedicated to the continued educational development of Pilates instructors and physical therapists, as well as other healthcare practitioners. We offer exciting and informative workshops throughout the year. Core Conditioning has developed one of the most comprehensive Pilates Instructor Training programs available, in accordance with the guidelines established by the Pilates Method Alliance (the international non-profit organization dedicated to the maintenance of safety and educational standards in the Pilates profession). The comprehensive course incorporates applied anatomy, kinesiology, functional body mechanics, and client assessment techniques in addition to the teachings and philosophy of Joseph H. and Clara Pilates. Students learn Principles of Pilates and their relation to the exercises on the Mat and each of the following pieces of equipment: Universal Reformer, Trapeze Table, Wunda Chair, Spine Corrector, Ladder Barrel, Ped-O-Pul and Props. They also receive in-depth instruction in teaching at all levels of difficulty and for all body types. Course Objectives 1. Develop an understanding of the fundamentals and principles of the Pilates method. 2. Learn the tools to instruct a mat class, equipment class and private session. 3. Safely prepare equipment and instruct clients of varying levels of fitness in a Pilates based workout. 4. Perform a postural assessment and make appropriate exercise selections to enhance a client s fitness experience. 5. Identify the relationships between various musculoskeletal structures of the body. 6. Have an understanding of indications and contraindications for specific injuries / dysfunctions and special circumstances (i.e. shoulder dysfunction). 7
About our Teachers Gabrielle Shrier MPT Gabrielle Shrier graduated with a B.S. in Kinesiology from UCLA and holds a Master's degree in Physical Therapy from USC. She spent the early part of her career specializing in neurologic disorders and is NDT certified. She has completed a comprehensive course in the Australian approach of manual therapy and is PMA gold-certified in Pilates and certified in Gyrotonic. Gabrielle practices Women s Health and CranialSacral Therapy. She has spent the past 3 years integrating Pilates and her background in physical therapy with her love of sports. She has been practicing physical therapy since 1994 and has been a member of the APTA for over 10 years. Dawn-Marie Ickes MPT Dawn-Marie Ickes holds a B.S. in Biology from Loyola Marymount University and a Masters in Physical Therapy from Mount Saint Mary's College. She is PMA gold-certified in Pilates and was elected to the first national board of directors for the Pilates Method Alliance in 2001 (a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion and maintenance of standards in the Pilates profession). She is a licensed physical therapist who has been teaching workshops in the areas of pediatrics, prosthetics and woman's health for the past 6 years in addition to developing educational programs for health care professionals integrating Pilates and rehabilitation. Her clinical experience includes Pre and Post natal rehabilitation, pediatric orthopedics, neurology and sports medicine. Her diverse clinical background and personal experience in athletics has helped Dawn-Marie to have a more personal connection in mechanics of body movement and sports medicine. She has a published chapter in Orthopaedics and has presented nationally since 1997. She is an active member of the APTA and continues to sit on the Board of Directors for the Pilates Method Alliance. Allyson L. Cabot PT Allyson L. Cabot holds a B.S. in Physical Therapy from CSULB, and a B.S. in Kinesiology from UCLA. She is PMA gold-certified in Pilates, certified in Gyrotonic. and has been practicing physical therapy since1991. For the past 5 years Allyson has worked to develop educational programs for health care professionals integrating Pilates and rehabilitation. She brings to her practice a unique background in mind-body fitness, drawing upon much of her own personal experiences in sports and fitness. Allyson practices CranioSacral therapy in addition to her diverse background in manual orthopedics, women's health and neurological rehabilitation. She has been practicing physical therapy for over12 years and is an active member of the APTA. 8
Roger Gonzalez Hibner, CPI Roger Gonzalez Hibner finally settled in Los Angeles after being invited to join the Lewitzsky Dance Company in 1991. He left his native Mexico to attend the University of Texas at Austin where he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance. After graduation he moved to New York where he worked with the Solomons Company/Dance and the Milton Myers Dance Company. He is currently involved with several projects that include playing and learning with his son Adrian and with the PostHouse Dance Group. Roger is a PMA gold- certified Pilates instructor who has been studying under Romana Kryzanowsca since 1995. He has worked with and taught master classes for dancers, Pilates teachers, physical therapists and many others. You can find him in the Winsor Pilates video series. Cari Riis Stemmler, CPI / CPT Cari is currently Co-Director of Teacher Training, Studio Manager and Education Coordinator for Core Conditioning. Cari has been working with the body much of her life; first as a professional dancer with companies such as Ballet of the Dolls in Minneapolis, MN and Winifred Harris Between Lines in Los Angeles, CA. She started teaching Pilates in 1997 at Bodyline Fitness Studio in CA, and has been a practitioner of Ashtanga, Hatha and Anusara yoga since 1996. Cari became a Certified Fitness Trainer in 2002 and now brings all of these disciplines together to cultivate a well-rounded approach to fitness and wellness. She has a strong belief in the power of movement as a healing force, one that is capable of making positive changes to promote balance in a person s life. Cari is PMA gold-certified in Pilates and is certified by the National Academy of Sports Medicine for personal training. She also holds a B.A. degree in Cross-cultural Communication from the University of Minnesota. 9
About Our Facility In response to a growing need in the medical community for a fusion of mindbody fitness and rehabilitation, Allyson Cabot, Dawn-Marie Ickes and Gabrielle Shrier have partnered to create Core Conditioning, a comprehensive physical therapy, Pilates and Gyrotonic facility. With degrees in Kinesiology and Biology, their collective integration of movement science with rehabilitation has led to the creation of a unique healthcare experience. They have developed a comprehensive Pilates program to educate teachers to safely instruct both fitness clients and those with imbalances/injuries. The partners are licensed physical therapists with diverse backgrounds including pediatrics, women s health, neurological rehabilitation, osteopathic techniques and dance and sports medicine. 10
