September 2013 [Volume 1, Issue 1] Connecticut Chapter, Employee Assistance Professionals Association (EAPA) Welcome to the new CT EAPA Newsletter! We hope you enjoy our new newsletter format. Please feel free to contact me if you would like to post information of interest to our membership and friends of the Chapter. This may include job openings, trainings, brief announcements, etc. Thanks and hope you join us at a meeting! Bud Wassell, CEAP, Membership Chair 203 688 2280 or bud.wassell@ynhh.org Contents From the President 1 Speaker Schedule 2 Minutes 3 Bulletin Board 4 June Conference photos 4 Message from the President Greetings! The Connecticut Chapter of EAPA welcomes you back to our monthly meetings after the summer break. Many of us last saw one another this past June when the chapter presented a conference on The Emerging Models and Best Practices in the Critical Incident Response in the Workplace. This was the first time the chapter combined forces with our LAP counterparts, and held a two day conference at Teamsters Hall, Local 1150 in Stratford. The program was well attended and the presentations seemed to meet the needs of the audience. We received much positive feedback on everything from the content of the program, to the beautiful facilities, food, location, and even the beautiful weather, though that was just a gift! Continued on page 2 NEXT MEETING September 19, 2013 8:30 11:00 Gaylord Hospital, Chauncey Conference Center Topic: Suicide Prevention

(4 th Thursday of the month, this month ONLY) 11/21/13 Social Security Updates and Effects on the Workplace Social Security Representative 12/19/13 Self Care for the Caregiver Ava Diamond, LCSW. This is our Holiday Meeting. All are welcome. Our CT Chapter meetings are held on the 3 rd Thursday of the month, 8:30 11:00am usually at Gaylord Hospital, Chauncey Conference Chapter Officers President: Rebecca Harris, MS, LPC, CEAP Rharris@solution eap.com Vice President: Orlene Allen Gallops, MA, CEAP Orlene1@comcast.net Treasurer: John Pacheco, LCSW Jpacheco@personalgrowthconcepts.com Secretary: Bud Wassell, MS, LPC, CEAP Bud.wassell@ynhh.org Labor Representative: Brian LeBlanc, BA, CEAP, LAPC briangleblanc@snet.net Immediate Past President: Gary Alger, LADC, CEAP garyalger@sbcglobal.net From the President continued Thank you to all who participated. We had a wonderful vendor response as well, and appreciate all the continued support we get from all of you. The executive board has been busy this summer planning our upcoming meetings that will inform and inspire you. We are also instituting a couple of new ideas this year and hope you will participate with us. This year, we plan to have one member serve as a greeter, handing out name tags, signing people in, giving guests fliers on membership and in general serving as our Chapter Ambassador of sorts for the day. We will have another member or two working with the hospitality team to provide refreshments and coffee. We will also be bringing back a popular activity introduced last year. It is our WIN A FREE NATIONAL CONFERENCE SCHOLARSHIP. In June, Orlene (Weyland) Gallops was our winner for the fall conference to Phoenix. Congratulations Orlene! This is a raffle for members only. For each meeting a member comes to during the year, they will deposit a slip into our entry box. If you bring a guest, you will get another ticket for that meeting. If a guest you brought in joins, you get yet another ticket. In June, a name is drawn for one member to receive a scholarship, so it really will pay to come to the meetings! Our meetings are held on the 3 rd Thursday of every month at Gaylord Hospital s Chauncey Conference Room from 8:30 AM 11:00AM. Continued on page 3

3 3 Conference Attendees Join Now! Here s How: Log on to www.eapassn.org Select JOIN NOW to complete an online membership application. nt continued There are refreshments and networking from 8:30 9:00, the business meeting from 9:00 9:50, a short break, and then our program with a guest speaker. For our OCTOBER MEETING ONLY we will be meeting on the 4 th Thursday, because the 3 rd week many members will be at the national conference, then report back at the following meeting. One of my personal goals as president this year is to have all active members participate on a committee, or to volunteer in some capacity no matter how short term that one activity may be. Perhaps you ll be a greeter, or a website volunteer, publicity helper? The opportunities abound to become more involved, and to meet and network with new people every time you come! I look forward to seeing you all in September! Becky Harris, MS, LPC, CEAP Chapter President Minutes June 20, 2013 The two main items of business before the annual conference began were the election of Officers: Becky Harris, President; Orlene Allen Gallops, Vice President; John Pacheco, Treasurer; Bud Wassell, Secretary and Brian LeBlanc, Labor Representative. And the drawing for a member to attend the annual EAPA World Conference in Phoenix, Arizona: Orlene Gallops was the lucky winner! For every meeting you attend your name gets entered into this drawing at the June Conference. Download a membership application. Mail to EAPA, 4350 N. Fairfax Drive, Suite 410, Arlington, VA 22203. Or Fax to 703 522 4585 Telephone EAPA at 703 387 1000, ext. 334 to request an application. For CT membership questions, contact Bud Wassell at bud.wassell@ynhh.org or call 203 688 2280.
