The David B. Levine, MD HSS Spine Symposium June 10, 2016 Provided by the Hospital for Special Surgery Spine Service and the Office of Continuing Medical Education Overview Care of the patient with cervical spine pathology requires familiarity with ever evolving modern instrumental techniques, implants, and surgical experience that may not be reported clearly or succinctly in peer-reviewed literature. Current research shows an increasing interest in cervical degeneration disease and cervical deformity, as well as techniques to manage and treat these conditions. However, many surgeons who evaluate and treat cervical spine disorders are not exposed to the latest modalities. The David B. Levine, MD Spine Symposium will allow course participants to address these topics through didactic lectures, panel discussions, case presentations, and Q&A sessions. Target Audience This activity is targeted to spine surgeons. Physiatrists, neurosurgeons, physical therapists, chiropractors, primary care physicians, residents and fellows can also benefit from this activity. Learning Objectives HSS professional education activities are intended to improve the quality of patient care and safety. At the completion of the course, the participant should be able to: Identify when to appropriately refer patients to complex spine specialists, such as cervical deformity surgeons, and be able to do so when appropriate. Describe the impact cervical spine deformity has on a patient s quality of life and relate the importance of addressing cervical spine deformity in a treatment plan. Describe best practices and the latest evidence-based techniques and treatment options conducted by experts for complex cervical spine disorders, such as comorbid cervical pathology with another spine segmented disease. Evaluate symptoms and indications to determine if a patient is a surgical candidate, and be able to do so in practice as well as describe non-surgical intervention options, such as physical therapy and pain management techniques, for patients with cervical degenerative disc disease. Describe evidence-based parameters for cervical spine deformity, such as age-stratified radiographic normative and pathological correlates, and also describe normative vs. non-normative alignment across the age spectrum. Accreditation & Credit Designation Hospital for Special Surgery is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Hospital for Special Surgery designates this live activity for a maximum of 5 onsite and 5 online AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s). Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
