Because every child deserves a future. Youth In Need has been serving the greater St. Louis area since 1974, when we reached out to our first client. A teenage runaway, who left her home after yet another beating, was picked up on the streets and taken to the local jail with adult criminals. Troubled by this, community volunteers changed the way homeless and runaway youth were treated by opening Youth In Need s Emergency Shelter. Today, hundreds of Youth In Need s full- and part-time staff serve thousands of children, teens and families in six counties. We aid y re, nurturing homes while they complete their education, learn independent living skills, secure emplo Youth In Need supports children and teens in crisis as they overcome abuse or neglect, and we strengthen vulnerable families who lack foundations of hope. For young people who don t have families to sustain them, Youth In Need becomes that family. We support them as they work through their crises, and we re there as they begin their own families. Youth In Need strengthens rt, education and encouragement. Doing so fosters resiliency to help families prevent future crises. A reputation for excellence. Youth In Need is applauded for the pr veness of its programs. Youth In Need: Is nationally accredited by the Council on Accreditation. Is a member agency of the United Way of Greater St. Louis. Is a recipient of the Better Business Bureau s Wise Giving Alliance Seal of Approval. Is recognized by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as an exemplary program. Provides evidence-based programs, based on solid research and proven, effective approaches. Has been named one of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch s Top Workplaces by its staff since 2013. YIN SAVED ME IN 1976 Keira describes her adolescence as one filled with a bad attitude. A victim of her stepfather s sexual abuse, she ran away to escape and turned to drugs and sex to numb her pain. She landed at Youth In Need s Emergency Shelter, which had just opened two years before and still operates today. Keira attended groups and met with a therapist. She had food and a safe place. I remember the safe place more than anything, Keira said. Finally, someone was listening to me. Within a few days, Keira s mother visited her at the shelter. Keira remembers her mother calling her a liar, saying she was acting out. Keira was crushed and left the shelter immediately. During her life s many twists and turns, Keira s addiction progressed over the next few decades. Now, she s clean and sober and is close to finishing her studies to be a drug counselor. Keira said she realized that Youth In Need was the first place that listened and believed her. I will always remember how I was treated there, Keira said. Always
