The Meals On Wheels High School Leadership Board (HSLB) is hosting this event to raise awareness of senior hunger in Tampa and to collect funds to be able to purchase an emergency safety kit, which will include a radio and flashlight, for all 800 senior and homebound neighbors served each day. The event this year was developed in direct response to Hurricane Irma and its effects on our seniors and homebound neighbors, as many did not have power for days. Nourish Enrich Strengthen Meals On Wheels of Tampa serves over 800 individuals a hot, nutritious meal delivered to their door by caring volunteers, 365 days a year. The quality of the food provides nourishment for the body. The encouraging words from volunteers provides enrichment for the soul. Together, we strengthen the community by caring for a segment of our population who are often forgotten. For many of the homebound, a visit from a volunteer is the only human contact they will receive that day. Our recipients receive a hot meal and a visit designed to achieve increased intake of nutritious food, improved personal outlook and health, and decreased feelings of isolation and loneliness. Meals On Wheels of Tampa is a proud member of Meals on Wheels of America and is proud to report 83 cents of every dollar donated goes directly back to programming.
High School Leadership Board (HSLB) The Meals On Wheels of Tampa High School Leadership Board is a service-learning and leadership development group comprised of outstanding high school junior and senior students. The mission of the HSLB is to connect high school students with Meals On Wheels of Tampa and their community, through a variety of activities including volunteering, fundraising and program development. Developed in the Fall of 2015 to provide a unique opportunity for students who want to get more involved with a local non-profit, focused on senior hunger. These students contribute to and inform Meals On Wheels of Tampa programming, while acting as ambassadors and leaders in their communities. The HSLB has organized a student music fest over the past few years, which has been a great success! As a result of the inaugural event, the HSLB developed and introduced a new program, Water On Wheels (WOW), in May 2016, to encourage healthy hydration. The students raised funds to provide reusable water tumblers, flavor packets, and educational materials to all of those served by MOWTampa each day. Past HSLB President, Maggie Fitzsimmons, took this project a step further, by applying and receiving the first ever Lightning Community Heroes of Tomorrow award, which was used to provide free water bottles to all recipients, along with their hot meal delivery each day. This year, the group will be raising funds to purchase emergency kits, including flashlights and radios, for all recipients on the program. This project was decided directly in response to the effects of Hurricane Irma this past summer.
What do we need? We are seeking partnership with your business to make the first ever MOWTampa 5K, Fun Run Music Fest a success. Why The MOWTampa 5K, Fun Run Music Fest will benefit our 800+ senior and homebound neighbors directly, by using the funds to purchase emergency safety kits for all. Here is what to expect: Friday, February 2nd Packet Pick-Up Party The evening before the races, Meals On Wheels of Tampa in Seminole Heights will serve as the location for packet pickup from 8AM-8PM. Also Fit- Niche at Wiregrass Mall will have packet pickup that day. Saturday, February 3rd 5K Enjoy a scenic run around the Tampa River Walk. The beautiful river and scenery of the city will surely impress all! Start time: 10am 1 Mile Fun Run For those that are just starting out or want to walk as a family, this is an inexpensive race. Start time: 11am Post Race Awards will be given out to the top three finishers in each gender and age bracket for the 5K. Start time: 11:30am Music Fest Stay for the music festival to enjoy local sounds from our communities youth! As a sponsor, you will receive recognition in all race promotions, and we share information about your business with our volunteers, supporters and all registered runners. Our event is also advertised through our race partner, FitNiche, Facebook, WTSP, local newspapers, and at upcoming races in Tampa. We have included the different levels of sponsorship.
