Workshop Summaries Seeing Through the Eyes of Your Heart Presenters: Rebecca Martel & JeanTait A culture-based psycho-educational intervention model that supports Indigenous female offenders affected with FASD who are transitioning from corrections to the community. The cultural foundation of the program encompasses a mind, body and spirit-based philosophy. Psychology, art therapy and the development of daily living skills prepare women for transition. Parent Child Assistance Program From a Rural Perspective Presenter: Tracey Knowlton The Lakeland Centre for FASD has been doing PCAP work in rural Alberta for 15 years. The PCAP Model had to be adapted to fit our service area. This session is an overview of the challenges we faced, how we overcame those challenges and how the PCAP Model can be adapted. Heart Work, Long Ours Quilt Presenters: Cindy Peltier & Alison Tranter Conference participants will learn how Wabano reaches clients using a cultural approach to prevent FASD, and provide services to clients and families affected by FASD. Conference participants will view FASD props including, FASD baby, tkinagan, FASD posters & Whirlwind of life DVD, and hopefully each conference participant will be inspired to come up with a slogan or message to draw or write on a quilt block, using fabric markers or fabric paint, the quilt blocks will be sewed together by the facilitators Healing our Hearts, Accommodating our People Presenter: Richard Willier This interactive FASD workshop provides innovative strategies to those caring or supporting others affected by an FASD. The attendee will be able to take home tips to better serve those living with a life-long, mainly physical, brain based injury. Tips, strategies, and an FASD Pocket Card will be provided. Cause It s Still Not My Fault: Applying Best Practices for Students with FASD in the Classroom Presenter: Allan Mountfort Many students with FASD struggle in the education system; but there is a simple solution. Using a Neurobehavioural Approach this workshop will give educators and caregivers specific strategies to work effectively with students with this hidden physical disability. We ve had the introduction, now it s time to sharpen the tools in our toolbox. Living Outside the Box Presenter: Tina Andrews How to construct "good fit" environments for individuals affected by FASD at home, school, work, and in the community creating opportunities for special needs individuals to thrive. A brief review of the central tenets of work done by Diane Malbin Ross Greene and Thomas Armstrong will be included. How to Communicate the Diagnosis of FASD to Children and Youth Presenter: Dr. Brenda Stade How a diagnosis of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder is communicated to a child or youth can have tremendous impact on self-esteem, family relationships, and how the child will work with the diagnosis for success. Presentation will provide specific strategies including when and how to best communicate the diagnosis of FASD. Let s Set the Stage Presenters: Debbie Michaud & Rhonda Konrad Parenting children with an FASD is a life long adventure. Caregivers are the key to establishing strong, interdependent relationships for young people and adults with FASD. Reaching that goal can be achieved through love, determination, tons of patience, laughter & parental strategies during childhood. This workshop with provide practical & achievable strategies that can be utilized during each stage of children's development and will help build strong healthy interdependence.
