La Mesa Volume 47 Number 6 October 5, 2009 Newest Paul Harris Fellowship Members Congratulations to our newest Paul Harris Fellowship members. Paul Harris Fellow recognition was created in memory of Paul Harris, the founder of Rotary, as a way to show appreciation for contributions to the Foundation's charitable and educational program. A Rotarian who contributes or in whose name is contributed a gift of US$1,000 or more to Rotary International's Annual Programs Fund may become a Paul Harris Fellow. Each new Paul Harris Fellow receives a commemorative certificate, a Paul Harris Fellow pin, and a medallion. Downtown El Paso Today President LuAnn Wieland (left) presents PHF awards to Dr. Gary Mundy; Joanne Latimer & Russell Autry Mike Breitinger (El Paso Central Business Association) spoke to our Club about recent developments in downtown El Paso. Mike was proud to announce the addition of 11 new restaurants and bars that opened this year, as well as the significant investment in over 20 ongoing private and public projects,
such as the Mills Plaza, Doubletree Hotel & Magoffin Park Villas. El Paso continues to grow and we should all be proud of the progress being made to improve the city. It s All About Attendance Regular attendance at Club meetings is key to the success of any Rotary Club. Rotary emphasizes attendance because it recognizes that to remain an effective Rotarian, a member must experience the good fellowship of the weekly meetings and be involved in the progress and projects of his/her Club. Attendance is a barometer of the vitality of our club s service activities, fellowship and membership growth. Are you familiar with our club s by-laws regarding attendance? Here they are: Article IV - Section 6 - Attendance Each member, other that an honorary member of this club, must (1) attend or make-up at least 60 percent of club regular meetings in each quarter of the Rotary year; (2) attend at least 30 percent of the regular meetings of this club in each quarter of the Rotary year. If such a member fails to attend as required above, that person s membership shall automatically terminate. The membership of a person terminated may be reinstated within the period of one year after his termination, upon his written petition, stating good and sufficient reason satisfactory to the board, provided however, that no former member can be reinstated to active membership in the member s former classification if that member s former classification has been filled. There are numerous ways to make-up a missed meeting. They include attending a meeting at another Club in the area or attending one of our Club s board meetings or various other Club committee meetings. You may also go on-line and make-up a meeting at EClub http://www.rotaryeclubone.org/ Here is a list of local area clubs and their meeting times: East El Paso Club: Noon on Wed. at Westgate Inn (Gateway West & Geronimo) Sunrise Club: Wed. at 7:00am at Holiday Inn (Sunland Park) Vista Hills Club: Wed. at Noon at Vista Hills Country Club El Paso (Downtown) Club: Thur. at Noon Double Tree Hotel (Downtown 17th Floor 600 N. Thank you to the following Club members who have Perfect Attendance to-date this Rotary year (July 1 Sept. 30) as a result of coming to our Club meetings, or attending appropriate make-up meetings: Jesse Allen; Carey Beamesderfer; Dave Driscoll; Izzy Duran; Gail Gale; Chava Gonzalez; Lorraine Huit; Chet Morgan; Bob Peterson; Marisa Guerrero; Mike Schimd; *Cliff Walsh; and LuAnn Wieland. *Note: Even though we don t see Cliff very often at meetings, he faithfully does an EClub make-up every week. It only takes 15-20 minutes to do this kind of a make-up. But, you know - it would be nice to see Cliff s smiling face again. Our Club s average attendance for the last three month s was as follows: July 2009: 71.6% August 2009: 71.3% September 2009: 73.0% One Rotarian wrote: When Rotary Club meeting day comes around, I do not have to decide whether to attend or not, for that has already been decided for me. It was one of the obligations I accepted when I joined Rotary. District Youth Exchange Meeting Dave Driscoll, Lorraine Huit and our Youth Exchange student Amanda Higgins, attended the District Youth Exchange meeting in early September.
