This collection has been divided into seven series: Group Against Smoking Pollution; Californians for Nonsmokers' Rights; Legislation; Nonsmokers' Rights Organizations; California Nonsmokers' Rights Foundation; Americans for Nonsmokers' Rights; and Non-Print Media. Materials include correspondence, newsletters, annual reports, research reports and studies on smoking, newspaper clippings, photographs, ballot proposition endorsements, pamphlets, signs, press releases and copies of legislation. Subjects covered include Propositions 5 and 10, tobacco advertising, tobacco industry, state, county and city legislation and campaigns and workplace smoking ordinances. Series V -California Nonsmokers' Rights Foundation -includes materials regarding the video "Death in the West" and the video is included in series VII -Non-Print Media. The collection is arranged by subject or chronologically for correspondence and reports. A finding aid is available which lists folder titles. Organizational History MSS 94-29 2

Americans for Nonsmokers' Rightswas established in 1976 as the Group Against Smoking Pollution (GASP)when several local GASPs across California merged and incorporated. In 1981 California GASP became Californians for Nonsmokers' Rights (CNR).CNR went national in 1986 and became ANR. ANR is a national group which advocates the rights of nonsmokers. ANR has been involved in political campaigns in California for Propositions 5 (1977-1978) and 10 (1979-1980) and 99 (1986), and against Proposition 188 (1994). Nationally ANR has been involved in banning smoking on airline flights and in upholding the Environmental Protection Agency's risk assessment of secondhand smoke as a carcinogen. Series I.
