Chair of the Board of Trustees Appointment of Chair of the Board of Trustees Prostate Cancer UK 1

Introduction Prostate Cancer UK is the UK s leading men s health charity. Prostate cancer kills one man every hour and is the most common cancer in men. It is predicted to become the most prevalent of all cancers by 2030. Prostate Cancer UK fights to help more men survive prostate cancer and enjoy a better quality of life. It has three priorities: 1. Supporting men and providing information 2. Finding answers by funding research 3. Leading change to raise awareness and improve care Prostate Cancer UK is raising its game in the fight against prostate disease and in 2012 merged forces with Prostate Action to pursue one common purpose: to help thousands more men survive and enjoy a better quality of life. Prostate Cancer UK s ambitious MANifesto, launched in October 2012, is an unprecedented plan designed to transform the landscape of men s health. http://prostatecanceruk.org/media/1624454/ manifesto_8pp_cover_ac1 3_.pdf Appointment of Chair of the Board of Trustees Prostate Cancer UK 2

Movember Movember, the month formerly known as November, is when brave and selfless men around the world grow a moustache, and women step up to support them, all to raise awareness and funds for men s health specifically prostate and testicular cancer. Prostate Cancer UK is incredibly proud to be the main beneficiary of the Movember campaign. For the last six years, the amazing efforts of the Mo Bros and Mo Sistas from across the UK have significantly contributed to our research initiatives and have supported men by investing in our services. Movember was established in 2003 by a few friends over a beer in a pub just outside Melbourne, Australia. The goal was simple to create a campaign promoting the growth of the moustache among like-minded people, and to have fun along the way. It is about real men, talking about real issues and changing the face of men s health, one moustache at a time. Movember now spans the globe, with campaigns in 21 countries in 2012. In 2011, 854,288 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas raised more than 79.3 million globally; with more than 22 million of that coming from the UK. Appointment of Chair of the Board of Trustees Prostate Cancer UK 3

Chair of the Board of Trustees Professor Paul Forster is stepping down as Chair of Prostate Cancer UK after seven years. During his time the Charity has more than quadrupled its income, in part through its status as the UK partner of the Movember Foundation. Last year the Charity went through a successful merger with Prostate Action and today it is the UK s leading men s health charity. The new Chair will therefore play a critical role in continuing an ambitious growth strategy to ensure that the issue of prostate cancer is properly recognised and resourced to match the fact that it is expected to be the most common cancer in the UK within the next twenty years. Prostate Cancer is governed by a Board of Trustees, led by the Chair, which is collectively responsible for agreeing the Charity s policy and strategy. http://prostatecanceruk.org/about-us/who-we-are/ our-trustees-and-patrons The Board meets four times each year in London and time commitment for the Chair is likely to be around two days per month. The position of Chair is voluntary, but reasonable expenses will be reimbursed by the Charity. Responsibilities include: To lead the Trustee body in ensuring that it fulfils its responsibilities for the governance of the organisation by ensuring that it acts in accordance with its constitution as well as those procedures governed by the Charities Commission; To work in partnership with the Chief Executive, Owen Sharp, to help him achieve the objectives set for the organisation and to manage key external relationships To ensure that the Charity s strategic direction, policies and objectives are clearly established and kept under review, maintaining effective communications with the Chief Executive and senior staff; To chair Trustee Board Meetings, which includes setting the agendas in conjunction with the Chief Executive, and engender a smooth working relationship between the Board and executive staff; Lead all Trustees to actively participate and contribute to the running and development of the Charity; To establish a constructive and highly effective working relationship with the Chief Executive, which respects their respective roles and also takes into account the skill sets of both individuals, and to monitor and hold the Chief Executive to account, including the annual appraisal; To represent the Charity at key external events, including some public speaking and media interviews as agreed with the Chief Executive; To develop and maintain relationships with key external individuals and organisations in order to assist in the development of the charity through the access of funds, influence or wider recognition. Ideally, at least some of this leadership experience will come from the customer focused commercial sector; Excellent chairing skills ability to draw out a range of views, synthesise and reach decisions on an acceptable way forward; A good understanding of Charity Trusteeship and the principles of good governance; Sound strategic skills with the ability to shape the ongoing work of the organisation such that its resources serve the mission long term, with the ability to build a collective vision for the organisation; Outstanding interpersonal skills, capable of managing relations with a diverse range of stakeholders; A warm, collegiate and diplomatic style, but with the ability to take tough decisions when required; A strong personal commitment to the vision, activities and objectives of Prostate Cancer UK; A good sense of humour with the desire to be part of a high energy and dynamic organisation that often addresses difficult issues but is equally committed to having some fun doing it. Appointment of Chair of the Board of Trustees Prostate Cancer UK 5

Timescale and process The start date for the role is negotiable but the Chair will need to be in place by December 2013 at the latest. The oversight of the recruitment process will be undertaken by a subgroup of the Board led by the Vice-Chair, Ray Kelly. The final appointment will be ratified by the full Board. Prostate Cancer UK has retained the services of Perrett Laver to help identify the widest possible field of qualified candidates and assist in the assessment of candidates against the requirements for the role. An executive search exercise is being undertaken alongside the public advertisement of the post. To apply for this role, please upload a comprehensive CV and supporting statement at www.perrettlaver.com/ candidates, quoting reference 1248. The deadline for applications is noon on Tuesday 2nd April 2013. Longlisted candidates will be invited for interview with Perrett Laver in April and following these interviews a shortlist will be agreed. Shortlisted candidates will then be invited to make informal visits to Prostate Cancer UK and formal panel interviews for the position will take place in May/June.
