Cancer Care at HackensackUMC Mountainside Unsurpassed Quality, Safety, Comfort and Convenience

A Nationally Recognized Standard of Care A Supportive, Community Setting In the years that HackensackUMC Mountainside has been providing cancer care, medical breakthroughs have significantly improved patient outcomes including survival rates and life expectancies. By keeping abreast of those advances, pursuing prestigious accreditations and partnerships and maintaining a supportive environment that promotes healing and wellness, HackensackUMC Mountainside has distinguished itself among community hospitals as a superior cancer care provider. In the aftermath of cancer diagnosis, finding the best medical care is a priority. For generations, patients and their loved ones have been relieved to learn that the finest quality care is available locally at HackensackUMC Mountainside. In fact, our Cancer Center provides the most current, effective treatment options coupled with the personalized attention, compassion and convenience of a community-based hospital. We offer: A comprehensive program accredited with commendation by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, a distinction awarded to only about one-fourth of all hospitals that provide cancer care nationwide. Multidisciplinary care by an experienced, patient-oriented team that includes boardcertified physicians with prestigious credentials in relevant specialties and subspecialties, as well as dedicated staff who have completed specialized training and certifications. Individualized care plans that emphasize emotional and practical support for patients and their families in addition to medical care. The most current, widely accepted diagnostic and treatment alternatives for most types of cancer including breast, ovarian, prostate, colorectal and lung cancers. Exclusive access to emerging treatment alternatives and clinical trails via a special partnership with the Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ), on of a select group of prestigious National Cancer Institute-designed comprehensive cancer centers. Support services that extend beyond diagnosis and treatment and assist cancer survivors throughout their lives.

Diagnostic Services Accurate diagnosis is an essential first step. At the HackensackUMC Mountainside Cancer Center, skilled physicians and staff use sophisticated equipment and techniques to diagnose cancerous conditions and precisely identify their extent of the cancer. We are equipped with advanced technology to perform CT and PET scans, MRIs, ultrasound, digital large-field mammography, and other tests that produce detailed images for diagnostic use with little patient discomfort. Our medical team includes board-certified specialists who perform the most current, minimally invasive biopsies and other diagnostic procedures when needed. All tests and procedure results are promptly evaluated by board-certified specialists. Our physicians are supported by a team of experienced nurses and technicians who have completed specialized training and certifications. A Multidisciplinary Team Following a cancer diagnosis, every patient s case is carefully reviewed at a meeting of our Cancer Center team that encompasses board-certified specialists in pathology and medical, radiation and surgical oncology. Physicians who specialize in other disciplines are also consulted as needed based upon individual patient needs and medical histories. The team collaboratively considers the various available treatment options and establishes an expert care plan.

A Personalized Touch Each Patient s diagnosis and treatment plan is thoroughly explained by a knowledgeable, compassionate physician specialist in a one-on-on meeting. The patient is encouraged to invite a loved one to participate, ask questions and speak openly about their concerns. A social worker, nurse case manager or patient navigator is designated to assist every patient throughout the course of treatment. Their mission is to minimize stress, provide support and encouragement and coordinate all medical, practical and administrative details so patients can better focus on treatment and recover. An array of support activities ranging from one-on-one counseling by volunteers who are cancer survivors to group meetings and Reiki, an ancient technique for alleviating anxiety and discomfort, are available on-site. Patients and their families are encouraged to take advantage of these soothing and uplifting services. The Most Effective, Current Treatment Options Cancer treatment plans may involve medical, surgical or radiation oncology or a combination of those therapies. HackensackUMC Mountainside has impressive credentials in all of those disciplines. Medical Oncology Whenever drug therapy is prescribed to help eradicate cancerous cells, patients are placed under the care of a board-certified specialist in medical oncology. Our medical oncologists provide supportive care in addition to making treatment decisions and monitoring each patient s progress. A medical oncologist coordinates care for patients who require complex, multifaceted treatment by other specialists.

A Patient-Friendly Infusion Center Our Infusion Center offers many unique features designed to minimize stress and inconvenience for patients receiving chemotherapy and other intravenous therapies: Unlike the open floor plan layouts at most centers, we provide private infusion booths where each patient can enjoy cable TV and other entertainment options or quiet time. All treatments are administered by specially trained oncology nurses under the direction of a physician. Radiation Oncology Radiation oncology or radiotherapy is a localized, targeted treatment option that uses high-energy rays to destroy cancer cells. Our radiation oncology program is the only one of its kind in Essex and Passaic Counties accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR). This prestigious accreditation certifies that we consistently adhere to the most stringent quality and safety standards. Our board-certified radiation oncologists are experienced in the use of both external radiation therapy and internal radiation implants. They are also skilled in the management of complex cases involving both types of therapy.

Surgical Oncology When surgery is necessary, HackensackUMC Mountainside patients receive a level of care that is unsurpassed in any other area hospital: Our talented medical team includes surgeons who are board-certified in relevant specialties and subspecialties to provide exceptional surgical care. Our surgical facility is equipped with nine modern operating suites, a state-of-the-art navigation system for MRI-guided procedures, four rooms with high-definition monitors to assist with endoscopic procedures and several specialized post-surgery recovery units. More than 12,000 diverse surgical procedures are successfully performed at HackensackUMC Mountainside each year and we are on the Forbes list of America s Safest Hospitals. A Special Partnership with CINJ Access to Emerging Treatment Options We are proud to be a network affiliate of the Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ), one of the 40 prestigious National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers and the only facility of its kind in the state. In fact, HackensackUMC Mountainside is the only hospital affiliate of CINJ in suburban Essex and Passaic Counties. As a result: Our patients have expedited access to clinical trials and innovations in cancer care including investigational alternatives available exclusively through National Cancer Institute designees and their affiliates. HackensackUMC Mountainside patients can receive genetic counseling through CINJ. Value-added continuing education opportunities help our staff keep abreast of new developments in cancer care.

Support Services Promoting Healing Via Mind, Body and Soul Our commitment to providing holistic care is reflected in the diverse array of beneficial programs we offer for cancer patients, survivors and their families: Individual, family and group counseling Pastoral, spiritual counseling Support groups, including Living with Cancer for patients with any form of cancer, Us, too for men with prostate cancer, and Look Good Feel Better, a program to help women undergoing cancer treatment improve self-esteem and manage their treatment and recovery with greater confidence Reiki and other activities that address the mind/body connection Assistance sourcing community resources including transportation services, homecare and financial aid Referrals to local, state-wide and national oncology specific organizations and wish-granting programs Comprehensive, Holistic Care As a full-service healthcare provider, HackensackUMC Mountainside is well equipped to address secondary medical conditions and side effects of life-saving cancer treatments. Our services include: Rehabilitation and occupational therapy provided by highly skilled, licensed professionals in our 5,000- square-foot fitness center or at bedside for inpatients Wound care including state-of-the-art hyperbaric oxygen therapy Nutritional counseling by registered dietitians Lymphedema therapy for patients with damaged or compromised lymphatic systems due to removal of lymph nodes, or radiation therapy Compassionate palliative and hospice care for patients who have exhausted all treatment options
