Cardiology services Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust is the flagship of one of the most prestigious medical institutions in the United Kingdom. Our services are underpinned by world class research and teaching. We are committed to providing the highest standards of care, looking after patients before, during and after surgery. Our cardiology department provides a comprehensive service with in-patient and out-patient facilities for the investigation and treatment of heart problems. Our diagnostic secondary and tertiary cardiology services are state of the art, delivered by a large multi-disciplinary team of highly skilled consultant cardiologists supported by cardiac physiologists, radiographers, administrative staff and nurses, each of whom has a specialist interest in acute nursing. Consultants in other specialities work in close liaison with the cardiology team. This team of specialists is dedicated to giving patients swift access to high quality diagnostic cardiac investigations, using the latest medical technology. 24/7 consultant-led service Consultants are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to provide specialist care for cardiac patients. There is a designated consultant of the week attending service as well a comprehensive invasive on-call rota. The Private Patients Unit also has a dedicated team of Resident Medical Officers who are based on 12th floor, who liaise with all consultants to provide comprehensive medical support to patients. The consultants are supported by a large multi-disciplinary team of cardiac physiologists, radiographers, administrative staff and nurses. All the nurses in the Private Patients Unit have been recruited with a clinical background or interest in ITU/HDU and coronary care. The team liaises closely with consultants in other specialities.

Specialist services Integrated cardiac imaging The department is a centre for integrated cardiac imaging with state of the art echocardiography (700 to 800 PCI stress echocardiograms a year, transoesophageal, 3-D and contrast echocardiography), cardiac CT and access to MRI. Invasive cardiology We offer a full service in invasive and interventional cardiology, performing over 3000 procedures annually through our specialist cardiac catheter laboratories. Over 700 percutaneous coronary interventions are performed a year. Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust is one of London s eight designated heart attack centres providing 24/7 emergency angioplasty treatment for patients presenting with acute ST elevation myocardial infarction. This service admits patients directly, by-passing A&E, for immediate consultant-delivered treatment. We have the overall best performance in London for the speed of treating heart attack patients and were runners-up in the BMJ Awards Secondary Care Team of the Year 2010. We provide a comprehensive service for permanent pacemaker insertion and device therapy including the implantation of cardio defibrillators (ICD) and atrio-biventricular pacemakers for heart failure patients. Heart failure We have a dedicated heart failure team comprising specialist consultants supported by a nurse specialist for initial assessment, diagnosis and treatment. Adult pulmonary hypertension The Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust is a national centre for adult pulmonary hypertension specialising in treating patients with sclerodermaassociated pulmonary hypertension. This service comprises two dedicated consultants and a team of specialist nurses. It has an international reputation for its quality of service and research portfolio. Carcinoid heart disease We have the largest carcinoid heart disease clinic in Europe specialising, in conjunction with the neuro-endocrine tumour unit, in treating these patients with complex valvular heart disease. Cardiac amyloid We specialize in the treatment of patients with cardiac amyloidosis and work closely with the team from the National Amyloidosis centre. Inherited hypercholesterolaemia The department has a dedicated lipid team looking after patients with raised cholesterol. It holds clinics in cardiovascular risk prevention and weight management and is a national centre for patients and families with inherited (familial) hypercholesterolaemia.

Private Patient facilities The Private Patients Unit (PPU) is part of The Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, which has some 900 beds. Its 5,500 staff see about 700,000 patients a year from all over the world. It was designated Large Trust of the Year 2010 by the UK s leading provider of healthcare service information, Dr Foster s Hospital Guide. In the latest annual ratings by the UK s Care Quality Commission, the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust was designated excellent for the quality of its services for the third year running. We provide high class facilities and a welcoming environment for patients and visitors. All of the hospital s services are available to private patients, 24 hours a day. Our wide-ranging expertise and modern facilities support the highest standards of care. Patient rooms The PPU is on the 12th floor of the hospital. All the rooms have amazing views on to Hampstead Heath or London s landmarks, as well as: en-suite facilities satellite television with remote control telephone with direct dial numbers Wi-Fi nurse call facilities five star private catering service (Hallal and Kosher available) a complimentary newspaper delivered daily as required. Four dedicated centrally-monitored highdependency beds have been set aside in our dedicated 12th floor ward, which has been newly refurbished to high standards. The PPU has its own dedicated kitchen which provides a five star room service. A key priority of the unit s staff is to provide a caring, friendly and helpful service, with clear information and explanations. Visiting Visiting times are unrestricted, but we ask all visitors to leave the hospital by 10pm for security reasons. Visiting with children is limited. International patients We welcome many international patients each year. A great effort is made to ensure that their psychological as well as their clinical needs are addressed. A 24-hour interpreting service is available to guarantee communication between our staff, patients and their relatives. A dedicated service to liaise with embassies is also available to smooth patients experience. We have a multi-faith chapel and provide information and entertainment through multichannel cable television, as well as international newspapers and magazines. Our catering service offers a selection of different types of freshly cooked meals, according to individual preference and faith.
