6 Royal Brompton Outpatients Clinic Heart assessment Royal Brompton hospital has an outstanding reputation for the testing, diagnosis and treatment of all conditions related to the heart and heart disease, for both adults and children. As well as access to our world class imaging and diagnostic services, our private consultation rooms are available for appointments with our expert cardiologists and surgeons. Our cardiologists treat a wide range of cardiac diseases using both invasive and non-invasive procedures. The Royal Brompton has one of the largest congenital heart disease units in the country, offering foetal, paediatric and adult services. Our consultant surgeons offer the full range of surgical procedures and have particular expertise in complex cardiac surgery. Lung assessment We welcome patients with around 50 different groups of respiratory diseases to Royal Brompton Hospital each year. Our areas of expertise include asthma, fibrosing lung disease, occupational and environmental lung disease, chronic lung infection, acute respiratory failure, cystic fibrosis, domiciliary ventilation and sleep disorders. We are a major centre for lung and chest cancers and both malignant and non malignant thoracic surgery, and are the leading provider of complex thoracic surgery in the UK. Our multi-disciplinary teams include surgeons, histopathologists, radiologists, specialist nurses, palliative care specialists and oncologists, allowing each patient to have a consensus treatment plan with immediate access to the best treatment available. The sleep clinic Royal Brompton Hospital has an international reputation for its work with patients experiencing sleep disorders and for its pioneering work in domiciliary ventilation. The sleep clinic is one of the largest in the UK and Europe. Our consultants provide treatment for all types of sleep disorder including snoring, obstructive sleep apnoea, narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome and polysomnography. We carry out sleep studies and treat patients at the hospital sleep centre or at home. 6
7 Imaging and other diagnostics Investment in high-tech imaging technology has revolutionised the way our patients are investigated. For instance, Royal Brompton hospital has recently invested in the most sophisticated CT scanner in Europe, which can scan a chest in 0.6 seconds and the heart in just two heart beats. As a result, such technology means that many patients can be diagnosed without the need for invasive procedures. Royal Brompton Outpatients Clinic Our imaging facilities include general radiology, fluoroscopy (screening), ultrasound, nuclear medicine, computerised tomography (CT), bone densitometry (DEXA) and cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR). In addition, our on-site pathology (laboratory medicine), physiotherapy (rehabilitation and therapies) and pharmacy departments offer a broad range of diagnostic, treatment and support services. Allergy testing An allergy is an exaggerated reaction by our immune system in response to bodily contact with a foreign substance such as pollen, dust mite, mould, danders and wide range of foods. At the Royal Brompton Outpatients Clinic you can be tested, diagnosed and treated for a vast range of common allergic conditions including hay fever, asthma, allergic eczema, hives, allergic eyes and allergic rhinitis. Dietary and nutritional advice As we are all increasingly aware, eating well is an important way of keeping the heart healthy. Following a healthy diet and lifestyle can reduce the risk of developing coronary heart disease, and can increase a patient s chance of survival following a heart attack. Our nutrition and dietetic department offers expert assessment and management of a wide range of nutritional and dietary issues, including: Weight loss individualised care plan to minimise loss of muscle mass while reducing fat tissue. Diabetic management tailored low glycaemic index (GI) diet. Lipid disorders - cardio-protective advice and dietary management of lipid disorders. Nutritional support to improve respiratory and peripheral skeletal muscle function, exercise performance and clinical outcomes. 7
8 Royal Brompton Outpatients Clinic Physiotherapy Our specialist cardiorespiratory physiotherapists work with our private paediatric and adult outpatients in our private consulting rooms. Cardiorespiratory physiotherapy can help with: Excess bronchial secretions (bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis, bronchitis) Shortness of breath (hyperventilation, asthma) Reduced exercise capacity Bronchoconstrictor trials to assess the suitability of inhaled medications Men s and Women s Heart Risk Clinic For many people, the first 'symptom' of cardiovascular disease is a heart attack. By then it's much too late: a third of heart attacks are associated with sudden death. If heart disease is diagnosed at the earliest possible stages, before symptoms develop, it can be successfully treated and even reversed. Heart disease can be present without symptoms. Our unique heart clinic for men women aged 35 and over can help save lives by detecting the early signs of the disease. Our detailed private patient screening programme includes a range of stateof-the-art specialist tests to detect the early stages of heart disease, including blood analyses. Clinical psychology There are many psychological problems associated with the symptoms and treatment of physical illness. Our clinical psychologists offer an assessment and treatment service for outpatients. We aim to meet the unique psychological needs of individuals with cardiac and respiratory conditions and to address common psychological problems related to, for example, diagnosis, surgery, hospitalisation, medical decision-making and treatment. 8
9 Don t wait for an appointment Recognising that the service we provide is for the convenience of our patients, most diagnostic appointments can be made for the same day, and always within 24 hours.
