What s a Psychological Reversal And Why Should I Care? Founding President, Association for Comprehensive Energy Psychology Certification Program Trainer & Consultant CEO, Integrity Revolution, LLC Author of 6-award-winner, The New IQ (c) 2011 Dr. David Gruder www.thenewiq.com Four Key Treatment Success Saboteurs 1. System Unreadiness to Benefit from Treating Any Specific Issue (SEI) 2. Not Selecting the Key Issue to Treat (PG/PTF) 3. Objections to ing at Treating the Selected Issue (PR) 4. Not Fully Embedding a Desired State, Belief or Behavior to Replace a Neutralized Undesired One (-10 0 +10) ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 1

Permission to Conceptual Overview What It Is: Establishing psychospiritual, emotional & physioenergetic permission, to succeed at treating a specific issue. Framing: Other than just-discovered intentions, any desired change that has not already occurred invariably involves risk. If someone is not already embodying an intention they desire, they almost by definition carry objections to doing so. What is the Root Cause of Objections to Success? Beneath the rationalizations, excuses and limiting beliefs that sabotage success lives a tension between Risks of making the desired change Prices of not making the desired change ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 2

Why Care About PRs? The Heart of Change Change is risky Change is risky in both directions Sometimes non-conscious parts of us register risk even when our conscious mind doesn t Some risks are real; others are imagined We rarely know which is which until afterward Succssful treatment requires securing Permission to despite the risks Psychological Reversal History: A Foundational EP Element Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncture: Meridian Reversals Applied Kinesiology John Diamond: Reversal of the Body Morality Roger Callahan: Psychological Reversal Hover-Kramer/Gruder: Psychoenergetic Reversal Western Psychology Automated Survival Plan Strategies Success Objections/Risks ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 3

Three Levels of PR/Objections Global Influence multiple issues (e.g., I want to be miserable, I want to be ill, I want to die, etc.) Issue-Specific Conscious or non-conscious beliefs about why one shouldn t get over an issue (or become fully resonant with a desired state/belief/behavior) Completely It s okay to make progress with a specific issue but it s not okay to be fully over it (or become fully resonant with a desired state/belief/behavior) Six Examples of Common Issue-Specific PRs 1. Having the Issue: I am so agitated at having this issue that it s getting in the way of my clearing it 2. Attachment: Parts of me want to keep this issue 3. Impossibility: Parts of me believe this issue isn t capable of being healed/embedded 4. Undeservingness: I don t deserve to be over/have this or someone else doesn t deserve for me to 5. Unsafety: It s not safe for me to be over/have this or it ll be unsafe for someone else if I do 6. Identity Fear: I m scared about not knowing who I am if I resolve this issue/embed this desired state ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 4

Three PR/Objection Assessment Strategies 1. Muscle Test: Test for presence of one or more catalogued PRs, and identify and treat them one at a time as indicated until MT confirms that no more are active at this time 2. Interview: Ask client what stands in the way of having 100% inner permission to succeed at fully clearing the block (or fully embedding their desired state/intention/belief/behavior); Confirm with MT as needed 3. Risks/Prices: Identify the list of risks the client would or might be taking if s/he succeeds AND the list of prices the client will continue to pay if s/he doesn t Four PR Intervention Strategy Options 1. One-Size-Fits-All: Treat all common PRs as though they might exist 2. Custom Dx of Catalogued PRs & Tx Points: Treat only those PRs that MT confirms as existing 3. Fully Customized Dx of PR Dx & Tx: Use client self-report & MT to teach you both about your client s unique PRs, Tx points and/or affirmation 4. Holding the Risks With Grace: Identify the risks of succeeding & the prices of failing (informed consent); Treat to empower client to become bigger than both lists so s/he can create inner permission to proceed or inner acceptance not to ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 5

One Size Fits All Get SET to Objections/Risks as PRs How to Convert Objections to into Inner Permission to Using PR Treatments Treat all objections that may be blocking permission to succeed. Here is the most commonly used EP formula for doing this Affirmation: Even if [objection], I [self-acceptance statement] + Activation: while tapping a related acupoint + Treatment Duration: The time it takes to repeat a typical affirmation three times (~15 seconds) ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 6

Objection: Global 1 I deeply and profoundly love and accept myself with all my faults, problems and limitations Objection: Global 2 I deeply and profoundly love and accept myself with all my strengths, gifts and ability to love ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 7

Objection to Having the Issue Even though I have this issue, I am doing the best I can Objection: Unhealability Even if I fear I will not succeed at treating this issue, I am now willing to be pleasantly surprised ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 8

Objection: Unsafety Even if part of me fears it is unsafe for me to succeed at treating this, I now give myself permission to succeed anyway, trusting myself to deal with whatever comes as a result Objection: Codependence Even if part of me fears it could be unsafe for someone else if I succeed at treating this issue, I choose to release my codependence, and trust others to take care of themselves, as I now move into integrity with my highest intentions ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 9

Objection: Undeservingness Even if part of me believes I don t deserve to succeed at treating this, I am now willing to be wrong about this Objection: Vengeance Even if part of me believes that if I succeed at treating this, someone who hurt me will have gotten away with that, I forgive myself for having a part of me that wants vengeance more than my own success, and I now choose success anyway ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 10

Objection: Identity Disruption Even if some part of me fears I won t know who I am if I succeed, or I won t be able to handle this, I now trust myself to grow into a more expanded and authentic me anyway Objection: Risks in Both Directions Even though there are risks in both succeeding and failing at treating this issue, I now trust myself to be large enough to hold both sets of risks side by side with grace, compassion and acceptance ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 11

Objection: Anything Else Even if I have any other objections to succeeding, I deeply and profoundly accept and forgive myself for having these, and I now choose success nevertheless, beginning now Custom PR Dx/Tx ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 12

PR Assessment/Intervention: Five Steps Using Muscle Testing Basic Test for Objections I have at least one objection to being (completely) over this problem versus I have no objection to being over this problem. MT Paired Diagnostic Statements for Objections E.g.: I want to be miserable versus I want to be happy Clear the FIRST objection you find Have client say the affirmation 3 times while doing a clockwise massage on the sore spot or doing a karate chop. Confirm that the intervention corrected the objection Re-test the PAIRED DIAGNOSTIC STATEMENTS to see if the treated objection cleared. Check for any additional objections Re-test the BASIC TEST ( I have at least one objection ) to see if all objections are now cleared. Holding the Risks With Grace ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 13

Holding the Risks With Grace Think about the issue you selected look at your attunement phrase. Write the following: Risks If I at Treating This Issue Risks If This Issue Continues in My Life What I might have to deal with in me or others What I might have to give up What I might have to do differently Difficult choices I might have to make Prices I am already paying for having this issue Additional prices I might have to pay in the future if this issue continues Holding the Risks With Grace Put both hands in front of you side by side with your palms facing up. Imagine that your Risks If I list is in one hand and your Risks If I Fail list is in the other hand Begin tapping your karate chop acupoint on the side of each hand against one other as you focus on both sets of risks Do you now feel larger than both sets of risks? Do you now feel inner permission to succeed with self-treating this issue despite the risks? (If not, MT to select a different Tx point or do EFT or TAT on this or decide whether other prep must occur before treating this issue!) ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 14

Your Objections/Risks Do you now feel inner permission to succeed at treating your issue despite the risks? If so, next treat the issue itself. If not, next treat whichever objection or risk you sense is most blocking your permission to succeed. Why Is Addressing Objections Important? Sometimes issues clear simply by addressing objections to succeeding. Always issues become easier to treat by first addressing objections to succeeding. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 15

Objections Summary Why are methods for establishing inner permission to succeed at treating an issue valuable to do even if you are not using Energy Psychology methods to treat the issue itself? When else, in addition to preparing to treat an issue, might you want to treat objections and risks? ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 16
