Emotional Intelligence: Self Awareness

It is very important to understand that emotional intelligence is not the opposite of intelligence, it is not the triumph of heart over head, it is the unique intersection of both. - David Caruso

Emotional intelligence refers to the capacity for recognizing our own feelings and those of others, for motivating ourselves, and for managing emotions well in ourselves and in our relationships Daniel Goleman

Emotion vs. Rational

Anyone can become angry - that is easy. But to be angry with the right person, to the right degree, at the right time, for the right purpose, and in the right way - that is not easy. Aristotle

Emotional Intelligence

EQ Two Step Think back to a recent conversation that you found challenging. It may be a conversation you were successful with or not. Walk through the four quadrants and share briefly what you did or didn t do in relation to being emotionally intelligent? How were you self-aware, did you self-manage, what was your social awareness and how did you influence communication?

Personal Competence Self-Awareness: Knowing one s emotions, resources, and intuitions. Self-Management: Managing emotions, impulses, and resources.

Social Competence Social Awareness: Empathy, recognizing others emotions, needs, and concerns. Relationship Management: Social skills, Adeptness at inducing desirable responses in others.

Perspectives How often do you seek feedback? How often do you share yourself with others? What type of feedback will help you develop and how do you ask for it?

Johari Window KNOWN BLIND

Jo-Hari Window 1. A change in any one quadrant will affect all other quadrants. 2. It takes energy to hide, deny, or be blind to behavior which is involved in interaction with others. 3. Threat tends to decrease awareness; mutual trust tends to increase awareness. 4. Forced awareness (exposure) is undesirable an usually ineffective. 5. Interpersonal learning means a change taken place so that Quadrant 1 is larger and one or more of the other quadrants has grown smaller.

Your Window Frame Where are the opportunities to grow your window? Which quadrant feels most scary or challenging? How do you see the Leadership Practice connecting with your EQ? Where do your strengths show up? What support or requests do you have?

Effective Relationships Know yourself : Awareness of your behaviours helps you to communicate powerfully. Being aware gives you the knowledge to make changes. Control yourself: Once you have increased awareness of your behaviour, you can begin to consciously control it. Know others : Learn to recognize behavioural differences in others to create win / win situations. Appeal to other s basic needs and wants: before you can appeal to a person s basic needs you must know their needs and wants.
