Additional data were evaluated in the framework of an evaluation prepared to modify existing MRLs for folpet in wine grapes, garlic and tomatoes (EFSA Journal 2011; 9(9):2391). A brief summary of the storage stability data on folpet and its metabolite phthalimide is given in the following table. A brief summary of the metabolism of folpet in plants is given in the following table. Page 4 / 26

In crops having received a foliar application, the majority of the terminal residue was generally present as folpet, phthalimide (through release of the trichloromethylthio side) and phthalic acid. The findings in potato tubers and root-treated tomato plants indicate that the most important residues translocated between underground plant parts and upper plant parts were the secondary metabolites phthalic acid and phthalamic acid. The soil degradation studies demonstrated that the degradation rate of folpet and its main metabolites in soil is rapid; the maximum DT 90 in laboratory studies was 53.8 days for folpet, 93.7 days for phthalimide, 13.7 days for phthalic acid and 2.7 days for phthalamic acid, all below the trigger value of 100 days. Thus, no further studies investigating the nature and magnitude of residues in rotational crops are required. Not concluded. No information available. The studies investigating the effect of processing on the nature of folpet residues demonstrated that under standard processing conditions (ph 4, 90 C, 20 min; ph 5, 100 C, 60 min; ph 6, 120 C, 20 min) the compound is completely converted into phthalimide and phthalic acid. yes Reg. Conversion factor(s) (monitoring to risk assessment) Phthalimide is mainly formed during processing. A proposal for a general conversion factor was not possible on European level, since most of the supervised field trials were conducted without measurement of phthalimide. IIIA 8.1.1.3 Metabolism in livestock and animal residue definition(s) A brief summary of the metabolism of folpet in livestock is given in the following table. Data, which has been previously evaluated on EU level is described in detail in the DAR (Italy, 2004). After oral administration, residues in animal tissues were very low and no accumulation was observed. Only in liver and kidney total radioactive residues were above 0.01 mg as-eq/kg (0.02 and 0.05 mg as-eq/kg respectively). The metabolism was found to be similar to that observed in rats proceeding via hydrolysis of the nitrogen-sulphur bond leading to thiophosgen and phthalimide which is then further metabolised to phthalamic acid and phthalic acid. 4-5 days Reg. Therefore, residues of folpet are not expected to occur in crops grown in normal rotation after those treated with folpet. Rotational crop studies are not required. IIIA 8.1.1.5 Residues in livestock Residues of folpet in commodities of animal origin were not assessed, since salsify is normally not fed to livestock. Page 6 / 26

This factor represents the highest median CF derived from the available residue data on plants. The consumer intake and risk assessment is based on the appropriate input values given in Table 8.3-1 and the toxicological reference values stated in Table 8.3-2. Results are also summarized in Table 8.3-2. For the detailed calculation results it is referred to Appendix 3. The existing EU MRLs for the crop applied for in this dossier (salsify) are summarized in Table 8.4-1. Table 8.4-1 Overview of the existing EC MRLs Active Substance Commodity (Code) Existing EC MRL (mg/kg) Proposed EC MRL (mg/kg) Result of OECD calculator Justification for the proposal / Comments Folpet Salsify 0.02* 0.02* -- No new proposal required Metalaxyl-M Salsify 0.05* 0.05* -- No new proposal required IIIA 8.5 Conclusion For the proposed GAP on salsify in Germany (2 x 0.8 kg folpet/ha, 2 x 0.1 kg metalaxyl-m/ha, BBCH > 43, PHI 21 days), 5 supervised field residue trials with folpet and 3 residue trials with metalaxyl-m on salsify were submitted. All trials were conducted in accordance with the critical GAP. In none of the submitted trials residues of folpet or metalaxyl-m above the respective LOQ occurred. Therefore the number of trials is sufficient for the evaluation of the intended use. Two of the folpet trials also investigated residues of its metabolite phthalimide. Further information on phthalimide residues in salsify is not considered necessary since no different results would be expected from additional trials. It can be concluded that the MRLs as established for salsify under the framework of Reg. (EC) No 396/2005 are sufficient to cover residues arising after treatment according to the intended use. A risk for consumers was not identified. Page 15 / 26
