COURSE OVERVIEW EDUCATIONAL NEED& PROGRAM GOAL The Opioid Crisis is a serious public health problem that affects almost every community and family in some way. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the amount of opioids prescribed in the United States peaked in 2010 and then showed a decrease each year through 2015. However, prescribing remains high and varies widely from county to county. Health care providers began using opioids in the late 1990s to treat chronic pain not related to cancer, such as arthritis and back pain. As this continued, more opioid prescriptions were written, for more days per prescription, in higher doses. Taking opioids for longer periods of time or in higher doses increases the risk of addiction, overdose and death. From 2000 to 2015 more than half a million people died from drug overdoses. CDC data indicates 91 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose. Understanding the opioid epidemic, improving the way opioids are prescribed through clinical practice guidelines and ensuring patients have access to safer, more effective chronic pain treatment while reducing the number of people who misuse, abuse or overdose from these drugs can ensure promising interventions to improve opioid prescribing, inform clinical practice and protect patients at risk. This conference focuses on updating health care professionals on the history of pain management prescribing, pharmacology and toxicology of opioids, Texas drug prescribing laws and regulatory bodies, a pain management physician s practice experience, the many faces of reward deficiency syndrome, opioid conversion calculations and new drug updates. Upon completion of this conference, prescribing health care professionals will be able to utilize the information provided to improve their management of patients in the current challenging practice environment. With collaborative efforts, physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and other health care professionals may apply the recommendations on the use of opioids to ensure a safer, more effective chronic pain treatment while reducing the risk of opioid use disorder, overdose and death. TARGET AUDIENCE This activity is designed for physicians in family practice, primary care, internal medicine and other specialties, as well as hospitalists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and other interested health care professionals. EDUCATIONAL METHODS The format will consist of PowerPoint assisted lectures, each followed by a brief question and answer session. Participants will also take part in pre- and post- questions facilitated by an audience response system. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES Discuss the history of opium poppy cultivation and medicinal use. Recognize opium, opiates, opioids, narcotics and endogenous opioid peptides. Describe the different classes of opioid receptors [Mu (μ), Kappa (κ), Delta (δ)] and their roles in therapeutic and side effects of opioids. Explain the mechanisms of action and therapeutic uses of opiate receptor antagonists. Describe the types of prescribing that are actively scrutinized. Discuss how problematic prescribing usually comes to the attention of the Texas Medical Board. Explain the neurobiology of addiction with special emphasis on opioid addiction. Discuss the concept of cross-addiction. Discuss opioid conversion calculations. Discuss new drug updates. Explain any question regarding proper use of opioid. Explain or discuss any uncommon chronic pain syndrome. Assess how to control the opioid epidemic in America. Discuss the algorithm selected for identified patients that may benefit from opioid therapy. Apply educational interventions to explain the proper use of opioids to the patient and family. Assess and diagnose pain. Explain how to follow the established opioid therapy patient. Select the appropriate pain intervention. Describe Texas laws related to pain medication prescribing. Discuss an example of how the Texas Medical Board Rules have been applied.
