The 2018 Northwestern Medicine Neuro-Oncology CME Symposium Course Directors: James P. Chandler, MD, and Roger Stupp, MD According to the most recent statistics from the NIH, brain and other nervous system cancers account for only 1.4% of all new cancer cases in the US, often with a grim outcome. Therefore, it is vital that healthcare providers are aware of the latest research and clinical developments within the field. This program offers participants a unique opportunity to hear from leading experts about state-of -the-art advances in neuro-oncology. Cases will be examined from multiple perspectives, providing participants with clinical pearls for diagnosing and managing malignant brain tumors to improve patient outcomes. We are honored to welcome Mitchel S. Berger, MD, Professor and Chairman, Department of Neurological Surgery; University of California, San Francisco, and Monika E. Hegi, PhD, Professor and Director, Laboratory of Brain Tumor Biology and Genetics; Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois and University of Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland, to join the interactive discussion and provide insights on the latest scientific developments. After attending this educational activity, participants should be able to: 1) Review current treatment strategies for gliomas and discuss treatment challenges in special patient populations.. 2) Interpret new clinical data on experimental agents currently under evaluation in gliomas and other brain tumors to identify opportunities to optimize treatment. 3) Review new research on cell biology, signal transduction inhibition strategies, and factors associated with angiogenesis and invasion in brain tumors. 4) Discuss the indications for endoscopic or endoscope-assisted surgical procedures. 5) Discuss the current data on radiotherapy and stereotactic radiosurgery for gliomas. 6) Discuss the current developments in novel therapeutic agents. 7) Review current clinical trial options 8) Discuss treatments of other types of tumors, including meningiomas, pituitary tumors, skull base tumors, and brain metastases.
