Emerson Hospital Outpatient Services A Growing Demand initiative to expand sports rehabilitation and specialty services 310 baker avenue, concord, massachusetts

Our pediatric occupational therapy specialists provide intervention through play to improve basic living skills and social interactions. A growing demand. Throughout the United States health systems are responding to a growing demand for outpatient services including advanced rehabilitation programs as care delivery models evolve to meet the various mandates of healthcare reform. In anticipation of this growing demand Emerson Hospital will create a new Center for Sports Rehabilitation and Specialty Services at 310 Baker Avenue in Concord. The facility will encompass 16,700 square feet and include a variety of rehabilitation services within the physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech language pathology scope of practice. In addition, the Baker Avenue facility will include the Dr. Robert C. Cantu Concussion Center, named to honor one of the nation s leading experts on concussion and a member of Emerson Hospital s medical staff since 1968. Conveniently located on the first floor, the center will be accessible to all patients and will have ample free parking. An on-site insurance coordinator will help patients navigate coverage, authorizations, referrals, copayments and co-insurance. The center will be managed under the direction of Dr. Karen Bougas, a specialist in physiatry who also serves as the medical director for the hospital s highly-acclaimed Transitional Care Unit (TCU). at a glance 16,700 square feet Aquatic therapy treatment pool Cantu Concussion Center Central reception Neurophysical gym Occupational therapy Orthopedic and physical therapy Pediatric gym Private physical therapy rooms Speech and language therapy 2 3

In this new location, the Center will be in close proximity to the existing Center for Integrative Health and Wellness facilitating beneficial crossover programming. The combined rehabilitation and wellness programs will serve individuals who need professional guidance but do not require rehabilitation level of 1:1 care. Patients who are recovering from injury or illness or who are working to improve their quality of life due to certain progressive diseases such as multiple sclerosis or Parkinson s disease benefit from a coordinated program of physical therapy. Whether their issues are musculoskeletal (muscle and bone) or neurological, better recovery, improved function and performance can be achieved by increasing physical strength, balance and flexibility. Occupational therapy provides individualized treatment programs to improve dexterity, coordination, strength and mobility of the upper extremities as well as cognitive and visual training for individuals with TBI or stroke. Occupational therapists are experts in restoring function of the wrist, hand and elbow by utilizing customized splints, adaptive devices and state-of-the-art treatment techniques. continued on page 8 4 5
