Teknocraft Unique Designs Teknocraft s new breed of patented, solenoid operated, proportional flow control valves are unparalleled in the valve industry. Our proportional valve line outperforms the other types of proportional valves through unique design innovations. Teknocraft s proportional valves have no rubbing contact surfaces which gives them low hysteresis, high frequency response (250 Hz.), quick time response (less than 35 msec.) and long life (in excess of 200,000,000 cycles). Since no sliding friction is encountered, the electrical drive circuit can be as simple as a straight DC electrical signal, however, a pulse-width-modulated signal can also be used. These single-stage, 2-way poppet valves will perform well even at low pressure drops. The poppet construction eliminates leakage within the working pressure ranges. The working fluid is isolated from the coil and other parts of the solenoid by an isolation diaphragm; thus, the fluid path is limited exclusively to the poppet area and the inlet and outlet paths. This feature make these valves suitable for both gases and liquids. Typical Applications Teknocraft s proportional flow control valves are presently used in a variety of industries which include medical, alternative fuels and energy generation. Our designs are utilized as blending valves in hospital ventilators and as fuel controls on alternative fuel vehicles, stationary engines in oil fields, turbine engines of energy cogeneration units and in fuel cells. Three Styles Offered These valves are offered in three styles, the Mini, the Standard and the Outlet Balanced Standard Proportional Flow Control Valves (PFCV s) with orifice sizes ranging from, 0.032 to 0.625. The Mini PFCV cover orifice sizes from 0.032 up to 0.156 and the Standard PFCVs cover orifice sizes from 0.147 to 0.625. The mini valves are not outlet-pressure balanced; therefore, they are limited to applications where the outlet pressures are less than or equal to 25% of the inlet pressure. The Standard PFCVs can be ordered with outlet-pressure balancing and can operate satisfactorily with outlet pressures as high as 75% of the inlet pressure. 3
Selecting a Proportional Flow Control Valve - Technical Considerations The critical specifications when selecting a high performance proportional flow control valve are linearity, frequency response and hysteresis. Other important features are repeatability, power consumption, leakage, life expectancy and cost. Engineers at Teknocraft have advanced the proportional valves by designing units that meet high performance specifications while keeping the valve simple enough to hold down costs. Using a unique solenoid construction, Teknocraft has achieved an unparalleled linearity, an exceptionally high frequency response and low hysteresis. Isolation Diaphragm Teknocraft s design features a rolling diaphragm which isolates the working fluid from the magnetic portion of the solenoid. This allows the same valve to be used for both liquids and gases. Exceptional Linearity Teknocraft s solenoid is truly proportional that is, the position of the solenoid armature (which also acts as the poppet) is extremely linear relative to the input current. As can be seen in Figure 1 page 14, linearity is maintained even at the high and low end of the input signal. Low Power Consumption Pressure balancing the inlet and outlet ports makes the valve very efficient in terms of power consumption. Another advantage to the Teknocraft design is the same low power solenoid can be used for various orifice sizes and inlet pressures. Long Life and Low Hysteresis The armature is suspended between two flexible flat springs which eliminates any metal to metal contact and mechanical friction. The suspended armature is the key design element which yields long life and low hysteresis. High Frequency Response As can be seen in Figure 2 page 14, the suspended armature is much smaller and lighter weight than traditional plunger-type armatures. This lower-mass armature combined with no mechanical friction leads to a significantly higher frequency response than the competition. Operates on Straight DC or PWM Since there is no mechanical friction, this valve can be operated from a straight DC power supply without any additional electronics. However adding a PWM signal further reduces the hysteresis to less than 1%. High Turn-down Ratio The valve flow turn-down ratio (an indicator of the resolution of the valve) is in excess of 20,000 to 1 on Teknocraft s standard proportional flow control valve and 10,000 to 1 on our mini proportional. This means Teknocraft s valves can handle flows as high as 1,400 liters per minute down to 10 cc per minute while maintaining proportionality and linearity. 4
Zero Leakage Teknocraft s proportional valves are two-way poppet designs with elastomeric poppet material. This feature produces bubble tight sealing of the poppet on the orifice. Outlet Balancing Available This version of Teknocraft s standard valve balances the outlet back pressure forces by using a lower balancing diaphragm.
