The Function of Macronutrients in Plants Primary macronutrients (Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K)) are required in relatively large amounts for successful plant growth and make up the bulk of most fertilisers. They replenish the soil with the nutrients used by plants for growth and survival. Nitrogen (N) Nitrogen (N) is an essential part of all proteins, enzymes and metabolic processes involved in the synthesis and transfer of energy. Nitrogen forms part of chlorophyll, which is responsible for photosynthesis and improves the growth rate and quality of the leaf. The application rate can vary widely and is dependent on the grass species, root-zone specification, wear pattern and height of cut. Excessive applications of nitrogen can lead to thatch development and encourage fungal disease. Phosphorus (P) Phosphorus (P) is involved in the formation of all oils, sugars, starches, etc and is essential for the photosynthesis process. Phosphorus is not required in large quantities, however, an extreme phosphorus deficiency will negatively affect all grass species. It is also necessary for seedling root development and to mature young plants as it encourages strong root growth. Potassium (K) Potassium (K) is used by plants in vast amounts and is rarely found in excess. It is needed for the photosynthesis process and it helps to build protein and disease resistance. Potassium leeches readily through the soil and by migrating to the leaf tip, where it is then cut off. Secondary macronutrients (Calcium (Ca), Magnesium (Mg) and Sulphur (S)) are required in lesser amounts and are available in fertiliser blends and as supplements. Calcium (Ca) Calcium (Ca) is an essential part of the plant cell wall structure that strengthens the plant. It facilitates transport and retention of other nutrients. Calcium is usually present in sufficient amounts in most root-zones and is thought to counteract the effect of alkali salts and organic acids within a plant. A poor fertiliser response or very low ph may indicate Calcium deficiency. Magnesium (Mg) Magnesium (Mg) is found in the chlorophyll in all green plants and is essential for photosynthesis. It also helps activate many plant enzymes needed for growth. The small amount used in several fertilisers to improve leaf colour is usually an adequate volume to sustain levels needed. Sulphur (S) Sulphur (S) is an essential plant food enabling the production of protein. It helps in the formation of chlorophyll and improves root growth, seed production and resistance to cold. Sulphur also promotes the activity and development of enzymes and vitamins. It is an inherent part of many root-zones and present in sufficient amounts in most fertilisers to rarely need extra application. 20 Sports & Amenity Product Guide

Turfgrass Manager The release pattern of different sources of nitrogen Organic: Slowly mineralised by soil microbes Release is slower at cool temperatures PSCU: Diffuses Urea through coating making the N available for an extended period Methylin Urea: Nitrogen is released by microbes and can give very good longevity Urea : The urease enzyme quickly releases nitrogen by hydrolysis Ammonium Sulphate: Readily available for nitrification The Function of Micronutrients in Plants Micronutrients are only required in very small quantities but are essential in any healthy growing medium. They are inherent in organic based fertilisers and seaweed products and are also available as supplements. Boron (B) Copper (Cu) Chloride (Cl) Iron (Fe) Manganese (Mn) Zinc (Zn) Molybdenum (Mo) Helps in the use of nutrients and regulates other nutrients. Aids production of sugar and carbohydrates. Important for reproductive growth. Aids in root metabolism and helps in the utilization of proteins. Aids plant metabolism. Chloride is usually inherent in the soil. Essential for formation of chlorophyll. Improves leaf colour & disease resistance Functions with enzyme systems involved in breakdown of carbohydrates. Involved in nitrogen metabolism. Essential for the transformation of carbohydrates. Regulates uptake of sugars. Part of enzyme systems which regulate growth. Helps in the utilisation of nitrogen Sports & Amenity Product Guide 21

After a moderate initial flush, a manageable growth rate and good colour continued late into November. The nursery is pure sand and this is the only product I have tried which gave decent longevity on this site. Constant heavy rain throughout most of the trial period did not seem to cause excessive leaching. I used it in 2012 on Tees and heavily trafficked areas. I got the same excellent response and longevity. Paul 22 Sports & Amenity Product Guide
