The photographs include keynote speaker Gloria Steinem, event organizers, workshops, volunteers, and musical performances. Nevada Women s Conference Photograph Collection, 1977. PH-00069. Special Collections, Historical Background In 1974, President Gerald Ford issued Executive Order 11832, which created a National Commission on the Observance of International Women s Year (IWY). The United Nations had established IWY and planned to celebrate it in 1975. As part of the celebration, the U.S. Congress, led by Representative Bella Abzug from New York, appropriated $5 million to finance state meetings and a national conference. In June 1977, Las Vegas, Nevada hosted the Nevada Women s Conference at the Las Vegas Convention Center, which featured a keynote address by feminist Gloria Steinem and elected delegates to the national conference that was held in Houston in November 1977.
