Level 2 Dyslexia Awareness Raising 19 th October 2016 This course is suitable for any school staff who wish to develop a specialism in teaching pupils with Dyslexia/literacy difficulties and/or wish to take a lead role in their school for literacy. The course is split into 3 sessions of a morning each. Session 1 - The definition of Dyslexia. Assessment for Dyslexia Session 2 - Synthetic Phonics Interventions. Session 3 - Barriers to progress. School policy and processes. Effective working with parents, including the issue of homework. Please note that it is a course requirement that all 3 sessions are attended and that participants complete 2 short tasks: The 1st task is about Dyslexia assessment in your school and is set in session 1. Language for Learning: Adult /Child Interaction in the EY Foundation Stage : 20 th Oct 2016 This is a licensed course delivered by accredited trainers, a specialist teacher and a speech and language therapist. Sleep Workshop (Part of Cygnet Training) Tuesday 22 nd November 2016 Introduce participants to a range of sleep problems in children and young people. Identify possible causes of sleep difficulties and consider the sleep patterns and processes in children and young people. To advise and offer strategies for families to successfully manage their children s sleep problems. Workshop Objectives: Research indicates that sleep problems are a persistent and severe problem for the majority of children with learning disabilities. Social Stories and Friendships Skills Thursday 13 Oct 2016 The workshop will explore the use of social stories to help those with Autism understand social situations. It will provide delegates with information about how to prepare, write and introduce a social story. The workshop will provide a breakdown of the range of skills necessary to establish and sustain a friendship and offer some strategies for their application. It is relevant to professionals working in a range of different contexts within the Education system. Work Shop Objectives: To develop a greater understanding of the preparation and process involved in writing a social story. To increase confidence and skills in using social stories to support children and young people with Autism. Participants will understand the skills required to develop and sustain friendships. Cygnet Training This programme is designed for parents and carers of children and young people aged 8-13 with autism. The programme is designed to: increase parents understanding of autistic spectrum conditions help parents develop their knowledge on how a child with autism experiences the world and what drives their behaviour guide parents through practical strategies they can use with children direct parents to relevant resources give parents the opportunity to meet with other parents who have had similar experiences and to gain support and learn from each other This is a core Cygnet programme which is delivered over six sessions (plus a sleep workshop), each lasting typically three hours, and which sequentially work towards behaviour management, covering a number of topics: Autism and diagnosis Communication Sensory Issues Understanding behaviour Managing behaviour Choice of topic decided by parents/carers. The programme will be delivered by trainers who have experience in working with children/ young people with Autism and will take place on the following Tuesdays: 11 th October, 18 th October, 1 st November, 8 th November, 15 th November, 22 nd November (Sleep Workshop at Greenbanks) and 6 th December 2016. All dates have a start time of 09.30 and last for approximately 3 hours. As you will gain a lot more from regularly coming to the group and each session builds upon the one before, it is important that you commit to the whole course. If you are unable to do so this time round, we look forward to seeing you at the next one!!! Places will only be offered to families with children/ young people who attend a school in Thanet and who have a diagnosis of Autism.
