OIE History: we came a long way.. An international conference was held in May 1921. It called for the establishment, in Paris, of an international office for the control of infectious animal diseases. an international conference was held in May 1921. Almost three years later, on January 25th 1924, 28 countries signed in Paris the International Agreement establishing the Office International des Epizooties (OIE) 6

Legal obligation for disease notification in animals The OIE was created in 1924 Legal obligation for all Member Countries to report to the OIE One of the main missions of the OIE is to ensure transparency of worldwide animal disease situation including zoonosis 7

World Animal Health Information System (WAHIS) Access to WAHIS allows users from Member Countries, namely Delegates or their nominees, to electronically submit notification reports: Immediate notifications Follow up reports Six monthly reports Monthly reports (since 2012) Annual reports Wild annual reports (since 2012) 10

WAHIS capacity building for Focal Points TRAINING ON WAHIS: Focal Points on Animal Disease Notification Focal Points on Wildlife Focal Point for Aquatic Animals OBJECTIVES : Development of their skills in understanding the notification obligations requirements and WAHIS use Encourage them to increase their coordination role in national animal disease surveillance systems and in collecting data 27

WAHIS capacity building Since 2005, national Focal Points for disease notification from nearly all Member Countries have been trained at least once 37 regional and global trainings have been run (average 25 participants) 28

WAHIS Regional support For selected OIE Regions and Sub regions OBJECTIVES : More involvement of OIE Officers in selected Regions Provide them with relevant skills to provide basic support WAHIS users in their regions when needed 29
