DRUG & ALCOHOL SERVICES BEATING ADDICTION IN COMMUNITIES New Beginnings Recovery-Orientated Detoxification Service

New Beginnings Rated by the people who use our services as excellent (Friends and Family test). Our Mission: To provide a programme tailored to each person s strengths which supports their reintegration into the community free from dependency. 2

New Beginnings is an integrated specialist detoxification service and Structured Day Programme based in Doncaster, South Yorkshire. We are able to offer a comprehensive recovery programme which supports people s reintegration into the community. Client quote: The one thing I have learned over the years is you can t do it on your own. We provide medically assisted programmes in a purpose built unit designed to offer the maximum amount of support for people aiming to achieve a drug and alcohol free lifestyle. The unit has 10 detoxification bedrooms and three flats, all supported by a team of our highly trained specialist practitioners. Our Structured Day Programme uses a variety of approaches delivered within a therapeutic environment. Provided through one-to-one and group sessions, we offer a wide range of psychosocial interventions together with a comprehensive range of life skills training and interventions to support reorientation and reintegration into the community. Our recovery focussed, person centred approach is evidence based and assists people to achieve their full potential by placing them at the heart of the support and care they receive. We encourage personal development and growth. We work with people, their carers and support networks to improve their transition into the community and maximise the opportunities available to build on their recovery capital. 3

Our Facilities: Sited on the outskirts of Doncaster, New Beginnings has regular and convenient transport links to other parts of the borough, together with excellent road and rail links to other areas. A variety of local shops are within five minutes walk. We have a tranquil garden where people can relax and an adjoining allotment, which forms part of our Structured Day Programme and provides the opportunity for fresh air and exercise. Client quote: A month ago I wouldn t have believed I could possibly stop. The unit is maintained to the highest quality and our accommodation is bright and modern with a range of single and en-suite rooms, providing a safe, secure and comfortable environment. A communal lounge area and three well-equipped kitchens complete the community feel of the unit. It is designed to support people engaging in a wider recovery community and develop new support networks. In addition we have a fully equipped laundry, an IT suite and a range of group rooms and activity rooms to support the delivery of our programme. We provide on-site dispensing and medication for people on our inpatient detoxification programmes. 4

Our Approach: At New Beginnings we provide holistic care within a culture of dignity, compassion and equality where everyone feels valued, respected and has the right to choose. Client quote: I have more self-respect now and that feels amazing! I m in a lot better place, not perfect, but happy with what life has given me. Our approach is based on the Five Ways to Wellbeing and our unique three community reintegration model. These two complementary approaches enable us to identify and build on the strengths that each person has to support their recovery and reintegration. Aspire Community Reintegration Model A community of shared experience Our service users all have the shared experience of substance misuse. This community is better known as a recovery community. A community of shared interest Some service users will enter treatment with interests intact, active or dormant, while others will need support to discover new ones. A community based on shared geography The mix of people, experience, interests, skills and contacts within a community based on geography forms a broad based network. We support everyone who comes to us to work towards reintegration into the community free from dependency. We understand that a holistic approach requires a diverse range of skills and we ensure this through our multi-disciplinary team approach and by encouraging family involvement throughout the process. With their depth and breadth of expertise and experience, our multi-disciplinary team assure the care we deliver is of the highest quality. 5

People who come to us are involved in their programme at every stage. We agree a recovery plan with each person to ensure that the programme is person centred and builds on their recovery capital. People who come to us are encouraged to share their experiences and ideas of the service so that we may develop and improve. 7

Structured Day Programme (SDP) New Beginnings has a range of qualified staff who are dedicated to work and support our Structured Day Programme. Together with the clinical staff they form an integrated multidisciplinary team which enables us to ensure that all elements of a person s recovery plan are complementary. There is a comprehensive timetable activities and groups and all people who are undertaking detoxification are encouraged to participate. This is based on a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) approach, which explores feelings and beliefs and the consequent behaviour that ensues. Individual Therapy Everyone is allocated an individual key worker who is responsible for facilitating the development of a recovery plan for each person. All key workers are trained in the delivery of a range of psychosocial interventions and will work on a one-toone basis with people allocated to them as part of their recovery plan. The key worker can facilitate access to other specialist psychosocial interventions as required. Client quotes: It s the longest I ve been sober since the age of 18. Feeling more myself with no guilt, sadness or worry. Groups Core groups run during the week and are always facilitated by two trained staff members. They explore relationships and communication within the peer group and support individual growth by challenging destructive and inappropriate behaviours. Our feelings group explores the five basic emotions of fear, love, sadness, anger and joy, and supports people to manage these without the use of substances. Recovery is made visible to people undergoing detoxification as they can share experiences in groups with others who are further on in their recovery journey attending the Structured Day Programme. Groups are run on a rolling programme and are open to everyone in the detoxification unit and the Structured Day Programme. An individual timetable of groups and activities is agreed with each person as part of their recovery plan. 8

Therapeutic Activities Everyone has the opportunity to access a minimum of 20 hours customised, timetabled activity per week while they are in the detoxification unit. Client quote: I m starting to enjoy life again and my family want to spend time with me. I know I will face many challenges in the future, at least I feel I have one now. We work in partnership with referrers, community colleagues, voluntary and independent sector services to deliver a comprehensive range of activities to support asset and skill building. Everyone is encouraged to build on the interests and skills that they already have and explore and develop new ones. Group activities such as gardening, gym and diversionary activities such as rock climbing, cycling and caving form part of the Structured Day Programme. 9

Case Studies John s story I ve experienced problems with alcohol addiction for years and my story is not unique. I ve always been extremely shy, and was bullied when I was at school. I ve also struggled with my sexuality for many years and haven t known where to turn. I used alcohol to block out the way I felt inside, but when my drinking got really bad my GP suggested I should go to New Beginnings for a detox. This was really scary for me, but after a volunteer took me there to show me around, it felt a really welcoming place. It took a lot of courage for me to step into the building that morning, but the staff and clients there truly wanted to know me and offer me help. It felt at last, that this was the place where I could change. After meeting a doctor, and discussing a detox regime, the date came, I was frightened and worried, but deep down inside I knew this was what I needed to do. When I arrived, I unpacked and immediately staff were there to support me. I started talking to people and found out they had been through similar experiences to me, and some had even been in the same place that I had been. Before long, the days were passing very quickly and I was learning more and more both about myself and how not to drink alcohol. I started to understand my triggers and demons and it s true what they say, a step at a time. I have now completed the Structured Day Programme which was excellent. This is what I called my aftercare, because putting the drink down, just isn t enough, you need to move away from it as well. I m now volunteering and mentoring for the service, and my confidence has grown so much and I really feel like I m putting something back. I m supporting clients who are setting out on their own recovery journeys, and giving them hope and inspiration that they can do it, just like I have. I won t pretend it was easy, but gosh it was worth it. I now feel proud about who I am today, what I ve achieved and what I have to give. John 10

Case Studies Annie s Story My name is Annie. I was injecting from a very young age as well as using alcohol. I m not proud of that period in my life, but I saw it as the only way to cope. Some of the things I did when I look back were really risky and I m surprised I m still here. I was in that madness for over ten years. I d attempted several detoxes at home but failed, I d even done an inpatient detox on the ward but that failed too. I saw no hope or future and didn t understand that recovery was more than a detox at that time. I started attending self-help groups, I even looked at NA but wasn t sure. Slowly but surely people encouraged me to go to the breakfast club at New Beginnings and start to look at what was happening for me. The team there were really friendly and welcoming. The breakfast there was brilliant too! I guess that kept me going up there in the early days as all my money was consumed in surviving day to day. Over time, I started meeting people who were going through detox, and others who had successfully completed it. They seemed really happy and I wanted some of that. I spoke to my keyworker who got me in to detox, it helped knowing the building and the people up there. They seemed to really understand my problems. I d like to say it was easy but it wasn t, but each day it got better and I learned a little bit more. For the first time in my life I felt I was moving forward. Things became clear and my thinking was sharper. I m now on the Structured Day Programme. I ve learnt to cook, not only for myself but for a group of 20 people. I m just going now to the gym - that s something else they helped me to get involved in. I d recommend New Beginnings to anyone, what have you got to lose? Annie 11
