THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM NATURAL SCIENCE 2 nd ESO

THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM The circulatory system is made up of: CIRCULATORY SYSTEM HEART BLOOD BLOOD VESSELS

THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM The heart pumps the blood through the blood vessels to reach all the cells in the body.

THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM The blood vessels transport the blood throughout the body. BLOOD VESSELS ARTERIES VEINS CAPILLARIES OXYGEN CARBON DIOXIDE

FUNCTIONS Transport nutrients through the blood to the body s cells. Transport oxygen to the cells. Oxygen is used to do cellular respiration, to extract energy from nutrients. Take carbon dioxide and other waste products to the lungs and other excretory organs.

ACTIVITY 1: Complete the following outline The circulatory system is made up of

ACTIVITY 2: Select the correct verb bursts The heart pumps booms the blood

ACTIVITY 3: Answer these questions There are three major types of blood vessels. Write them. What blood vessel transports oxygen? What blood vessel transports carbon dioxide? What blood vessel is the thinnest?

ACTIVITY 4: Complete with the correct word. waste products nutrients carbon dioxide oxygen Transport through the blood to the body s cells. Transport to the cells. It is used to do cellular respiration. Take and other to the lungs and other excretory organs.

TYPES OF CIRCULATORY SYSTEM There are two main types of circulatory system: CIRCULATORY SYSTEMS OPEN CLOSED

OPEN CIRCULATORY SYSTEM 1. The blood leaves the arteries. 2. It comes into contact with the cells. 3. The substances are exchanged. 4. The blood is sucked back towards the heart. Animals: Arthropods and molluscs, except cephalopods.

CLOSED CIRCULATORY SYSTEM The blood circulates continuously through the blood vessels. It never leaves the blood vessels. 1. The heart sends blood to the arteries. 2. They form networks of capillaries that extend between the cells. 3. Substances are exchanged through the capillaries. 4. Then the blood reaches the veins, which take it back to the heart. Animals: annelids, cephalopods and vertebrates

ACTIVITY 5: Write O or C depending of the type of circulation of each animal Bee Octopus Clam Butterfly Worm Prawn Cat Spider Grasshopper Human

HOW DOES THE HEART WORK? The heart is an organ of the circulatory system. It makes the blood circulate. It is made up of two pumps which contract rhythmically. In each movement, the heart sends blood to the arteries or receives blood from the veins: https://youtu.be/-s5icocaofc

PARTS OF THE HEART

ACTIVITY 6: Take your pulse Search for arteries around your body: under your ear, on your waist. Once you find a good one, relax and count. How many beats do you feel? (During 15 seconds) Now multiply this number by 4. This is your heart rate!!! (number of beats per minute) A normal heart rate is from 60 bpm to 90 bpm. But, doing exercise it can be more than 100 bpm. Being the maximum = 220 bpm age.

Use a calculator to work out how many times your heart beats: Per hour: Per day: In a year: multiplying by 60 multiplying by 24 multiplying by 365 Since you were born: multiplying by your age

ACTIVITY 7: Listen to this song and try to sing it. http://www.teachertube.com/video/circulatorysystem-196915

ACTIVITY 8: Complete the text. Arteries body capillaries lungs veins thin artery muscle more right lungs valves - heart Blood is pumped around my body by my. Blood travels away from my heart in and back to my heart in. The tiniest blood vessels are called and these have very walls so things can pass in and out. When I feel my pulse I am touching an. The heart is made out of. The blood on the left-side contains oxygen than the blood on the -side. This is because the blood has just come back from the. The left-side of the heart pumps blood all around the. The heart has to stop the blood from flowing backwards.

ACTIVITY 9: Complete this picture with the correct names. Right auricle Aorta Left ventricle Right ventricle Pulmonary artery Left auricle
