Both organisations recognise that people suffering from minor ill health, or recovering from more serious illnesses, can benefit from the many health-related activities offered in local gyms and leisure centres. This may be by participation in a group activity such as an organised class, or by seeking a period of one-to-one tuition in one of the leisure centres. The benefits are many, and are not just restricted to individuals with physical illness, but can also be of use to people affected by depression, anxiety or low mood. Gyms and swimming pools are not just for athletic-types who already enjoy a good level of fitness. They may be an ideal venue for the improvement of physical and mental wellbeing for people recently out of hospital, or those who are struggling with a long term disease affecting their strength, coordination, energy levels or mobility. Many local residents - and even some doctors - don t know that these services are all out there, at very low cost, throughout the city. This brochure sets out some of the options that are available. Being more physically active helps to control type 2 diabetes. It can help by lowering blood glucose levels and blood pressure, increased physical activity can also improve the body s ability to use insulin. fit for diabetes cystic fibrosis exercise service TOP TIP Physical activity is good for the body in many ways; it keeps muscles, ligaments and other soft tissues supple helping build stronger muscles, joints and bones. The Diabetes Educational Programme for newly diagnosed type 2 patients runs over 2 sessions. The first session takes place at the Royal Infirmary and the Western General Hospitals. The second session is hosted by clinical specialists alongside Edinburgh Leisure instructors at both Ainslie Park Leisure Centre and Gracemount Leisure Centre. Being active is an important element of the overall management of Cystic Fibrosis (CFS). The education sessions are delivered by a multi-disciplinary team of healthcare professionals. The group session gives patients a greater overview and understanding of Type 2 Diabetes and provides information on how to manage the condition. Ainslie Park Leisure Centre and Gracemount Leisure Centre both offer a tailored group gym class for those with Type 2 Diabetes. Dedicated gym instructors lead the exercise sessions and ensure all participants have detailed individual programmes to work to. Participants receive continued support, encouragement and have regular programme reviews. These sessions cost 2.90 per visit and run at the following times: Ainslie Park Leisure Centre Monday - 2.00 3.00pm Gracemount Leisure Centre Thursday - 3.00 4.00pm If you would like further information about the classes contact: Hannah Macrae Health Development Officer for Older Adults Email: hannahmacrae@edinburghleisure.co.uk This exercise opportunity is for existing Cystic Fibrosis Service patients, aiming to improve their health and wellbeing. The Cystic Fibrosis Service (CFS) health professionals at the Western General Hospital refer patients to Edinburgh Leisure. Participants are issued with a leisure card by Edinburgh Leisure, giving access to gym and swim facilities across all venues. The cost of the leisure card is covered by the CFS. The exercise programme is tailored to the interest of the participant, taking into account their fitness abilities and goals they wish to achieve.
