2 BUCS Development Event Inclusion and Innovation Warwick Sport Case Study: Physical Activity and Mental Health Gemma Morris, Thursday 20th April 2017
3 Our vision is quite simple by 2020 we aim to be the most physically active campus in the UK, encouraging everyone to be active every day.
4 Background Warwick Sport received USAF funding for Mental Health Physical Activity Referral Trial Project: Partnership approach between Warwick Sport and campus Wellbeing Support Services. Occupational Therapy Assessment Report with recommendations for Warwick Sport and wellbeing programme To engage students at the University of Warwick who have mental health difficulties and are currently completely inactive. Physical Activity Referral & Mental Health and Wellbeing Outreach.
5 Insight: Student Mental Health Considerations 63% of students experience stress or anxiety which interfere with day to day life. (YouGov,2016) Students diagnosed with depression are twice as likely to drop out of their studies. (Stanley et al., 2007) 54% of students who reported experiencing mental health difficulties within HEIs did not seek support (AAPG, 2015) Students who are younger, from minority groups or disadvantaged backgrounds are less likely to access support due to perceived stigma. (Eisenberg et al., 2009) Warwick University Stats 6 Mental Health Coordinators (MHCs) saw 1,142 students cases in face-to-face and 146 counselling student registrations in % increase from previous year. Estimated that 80% of students seen by MHCs would benefit from some physical activity and are currently mostly all inactive.
6 Warwick Sport Mental Health Programme Physical Activity Referral Programme Wellbeing Support Services Refer students to Warwick Sport who s mental health could benefit from engaging in physical activity. Warwick Sport Facilitate 12-week supportive physical activity programme for referred students. Improve the accessibility of Warwick Sport s facility and programmes for those with mental health struggles. Mental Health and Wellbeing Outreach Programme Classes offered in accessible locations across campus (e.g. Library). Designed to improve mood, resilience and coping abilities and to reduce stress.
7 Warwick Sport Physical Activity Referral Programme 6 Face-To-Face Sessions and Texting Support Inclusion / exclusion criteria for Programme. Education on the mood/ health benefits of physical activity and welcome pack. Client-centred Programme Planning. Motivational Support. Help to book and coordinate activities. Tracking Activity and Mood. Introduction to Social Networks. Developing opportunities to volunteer in the future. Gold Gym Membership.
8 Monitoring and Evaluating Warwick Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (WEMWBS) WEMWBS is a 14 item scale with 5 response categories, summed to provide a single score ranging from The items are all worded positively and cover both feeling and functioning aspects of mental wellbeing. 3-8 point increase from start to finish is a good indicator of a programmes success rates
9 Monitoring and Evaluating Monitor number of students that have taken part in the programme. Monitor activity and mood via Text Message and Student Self/Tracking sheet. Student to complete a programme evaluation/ feedback form. Develop a case study Term 2 Figures: ~200 on outreach programme 16 currently on referral programme Log in another 30 minutes of activity in the gym. 10 Time intensive. Challenges Physical Activity Referral Challenges Specialist knowledge and training for those delivering on the programme. Many referred students do not want to do physical activity on their own. 12 week programme overlapping with Student Holiday. Breadth of physical activity individuals want to take part in and catering for this.
11 Mental Health and Wellbeing Outreach Programme: 8 beginner level exercise classes. Classes last between minutes. Variety of classes from calming and restorative mind body movement to stress-busting lightweight resistance training. Offered free of charge in accessible locations across campus (e.g. Library). I was feeling stressed so I did the Move for Energy class 11:00-11:45 today. Completely killed my legs but feeling a little more alive now. Julia Referral Student
12 Mental Health Outreach Feedback I felt much better after the Mind Body class. It helped me to relieve tension and stress. It s great to have a short break in between my University work. The location is also good as it is not far-easy to reach. Heidi Friz Horzella, PhD student I enjoyed the activitiesthat were in Resistance to Stress a lot. I felt energised and relaxed the rest of the day. Ialso slept really well that night which is always a bonus. It was nice to make new friends. Emma (Postgraduate Student)
13 Improving Accessibility for Students Struggling with Mental Health Student Minds Mental Health in Sport training for Sport Clubs and Volunteer Activators. Offering a Beginners to the Gym Class and a Supportive Gym Hour. Mental Health and Wellbeing Outreach.
14 Future Vision: Warwick Sport Active Buddy Scheme - Offered to all Warwick University students who would benefit from having a Buddy to do physical activity with. - Active Buddies will be trained to work with individuals on the referral programme with mild-moderate mood struggles. - Active Buddies will work closely with the Referral Programme Coordinator. - Will provide additional resource to be able to grow our programmes. It would be motivating if I had someone to exercise with. I don t have anyone I can ask.
