Immobilisation Immobilisation The immobilisation of emergency patients is becoming increasingly important for the fire brigade and the rescue services. Many different systems are used depending on the type of injury. The cervical support (neck brace) is fitted to relieve and immobilise the patient's cervical vertebrae. The splint creates a solid support between the head and the shoulders. The rescue corset is used to immobilise patients in locations that are difficult to access. Only the upper body and the head are fixed in position. The system can therefore be fitted when seated (car passengers). The back is supported by sewn-in stays. The corset is fixed to the body using several belts and immobilises the entire spine. The neck should also be supported using a cervical support. Vacuum splints or vacuum mattresses can be used to immobilise individual extremities or as an independent tool. These splints are made from a flexible, air impermeable outer material and are filled with small balls and air. This makes the splints extremely flexible and extremely adaptable to the contours of the body. After the splint has been applied, the air is extracted from the splint/mattress using a vacuum pump. The splint therefore hardens in the modelled shape, immobilising the relevant part of the body. Spine boards are used to completely immobilised injured persons. The spine board is slid beneath the patient, and the injured person is secured to the board using the relevant belt system and a head restraint. The spine board can also be used as a stretcher. 262

Spine boards Spine board The spine board is now the most important aid in immobilising patients with spine injuries. Additional lateral bars in the handles allow two different strap systems to be used. The patient can be quickly and safely secured to the board in order to be quickly rescued from the danger area. There are sturdy metal karabiners on the ends of the straps that are clipped to the lateral bars. This makes the board ready for use extremely quickly. The spider strap system can be used to fully immobilise the patient. Spine board accessories Spider strap system Strap system for secure immobilisation of patients on a spine board. The colour-coded lateral straps make it easier to fit.
