A B S T R A C T Title : PHYSICAL FITNESS ACTIVITIES FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PUPILS OF MATACON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Researcher : DOMAGSANG, Ariel B. Type of Document ; Unpublished Thesis SUMMARY This study dealt with the physical fitness activities for elementary school pupils of Matacon Elementary School, Polangui South District, Albay Division are presented in this chapter. Specifically, it looked into the pre-post test performance based on the Physical Fitness Test which were subjected to statistical significant test of difference including health- and skill-related improvement. Finally, it came up with physical fitness activities to improve the physical fitness performance of the pupils. The descriptive method through survey using questionnaire-checklist, unstructured interview and document(ary) analysis were utilized in this research. There were 171 grades five and six pupil participants in this undertaking. (1a) The pre-test nutritional findings revealed that a little over two-thirds (59 or 65.56%) of the grade five pupils had normal body mass index while others were underweight (30 or 33.33%) and over -weight (1 or 1.11%). Six (46 or 59.74%) were normal while four (31 or 40.26%) underweight for every ten pupils. In muscular performance, nearly sixty percent (101 or 59.06%) need enhancement while forty percent (70 or 40.94%) need improvement in trunk lift. A little over half (91 or 53.22%) need enhancement in 90 degree push up while

the rest (80 or 46.78%) need imp rovement. Similar situation for partial curl-up component where 88 or 51.46 percent need enhancement/alternatives while others (83 or 48.54%) need improvement in partial curl-up. On flexibility, nine for every ten pupils need improvement either in Sit and Reach right (156 or 91.23%) or left (153 or 89.47%) leg bent, while ten percent need enhancement. Not a pupil needs improvement in shoulder flexibility, right arm up but all of them need enhancement. Nearly one-third (58 or 33.92%) need improvement in left arm up while 133 (66.08%) need enhancement. Majority (97 or 56.73%) need enhancement activities on physiological fitness (1-k run) while forty percent (74 or 43.27%) need improvement. Sports talents of the pupils average in sitting height (112.82 cm) and arm span (136.79 cm) in anthropometrics. Muscular power sit and Reach standing long jump (89 or 52.05%) and basketball pass (88 or 51.46%) need enhancement. They need improvement in basketball pass (83 or 48.54%) and standing long jump (82 or 47.95%). Eighty-nine (89 or 52.05%) percent need enhancement on speed in the 40-meter sprint while others need improvement (82 or 47.95%). (1b) Results of the post-tests (after the teaching intervention) upheld that nearly seven (56 or 69.14%) for every ten grade six pupils were normal in BMI while three (25 or 30.89%) were underweight. Majority or two -thirds registered normal body mass indices especially grade five (60 or 66.67%). Nearly one-third (30 or 33.33%) were underweight and need improvement. Of the three muscular components, trunk lift (97 or 56.73%) followed 90 degree push up (95 or 55.56%) and partial curl-up (94 or 54.97%) need improvement while a little over half

to nearly one-half of the pupils need enhancement. This was not the scenario for flexibility with more improvement rather than enhancement. Right (148 or 86.55%) and left (147 or 85.96%) leg bent sit and reach flexibility performance need improvement rather than enhancement. Not a pupil needs improvement on right shoulder flexibility but all need enhancement (171 or 100.00%). A little over ten percent (22 or 12.87%) need improvement on left shoulder flexibility while majority (149 or 87.13%) for enhancement. Physiological fitness perform-ance in 1-k run needs enhancement (93 or 54.39%) rather than improvement (78 or 45.61%). Sport talents performance in the post-test revealed average performance in sitting height (112.82 cm) and arm span (136.79 cm) a nthropometrics. For muscular power, standing long jump (9 3 or 54.39%) and basketball pass (87 or 50.88%) generally need enhancement. A similar situation holds true for speed in 40-meter sprint (91 or 53.22%) needs enhancement instead of improvement (80 or 46.78%). (2) On health related, the pre-post test results for body mass index of the pupils yielded a t-value of -9.753 (ρ > 0). On skills related, muscular fitness for Trunk Lift 90-Degrees Push Ups and Partial Curl-Ups obtained t-test results of - 20.322, -19.288, and -17.736. It showed significant difference for Sit and Reach Left ( -10.262), Right ( -10.330) Leg Bent flexibility and Right Arms-up flexibility (6.733) or the 1-kilometer run Physiological Fitness (9.532). Pre -post test in Anthropometrics was not statistically significant but not for muscular power Standing Long Jump ( -15.524) and basketball pass ( -12.419) or the 40-Meter

Sprint (11.804) speed component. (3) The physical fitness activities consisted of one hundred twenty-six activities. It is therefore, concluded that: (1) The pupils demonstrat ed improved performance along the nutritional, muscular, flexibility and physiological physical fitness components. Similarly with sports talent anthropometrics, muscular power and speed. (2) There is statistical significant difference in the performance of pupils in health- and skills-related in the pre-post test result. (3) The physical fitness activities are meant to improve the physical fitness performance of the pupils. Hence: the recommendation are : (1) There is the need to sustain the improved of the pupils along the nutritional, muscular, flexibility and physiological physical fitness components. Likewise, the sports talent anthropometrics, muscular power and speed. (2) Health - and skills-related activities should be regularly provided to the pupils. (3) The physical fitness activities should be piloted in the district for at least one school year. (4) the exercise should used by the specific age level and based on needs of the one who will use this. (5) A similar study should be conducted in other schools/districts.

PROPOSED PHYSICAL FITNESS ACTIVITIES FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PUPILS OF MATACON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Problem Findings Conclusion Recommendation 1. What is the performance of the elementary school pupils in the Physical Fitness Test? a. pre-test The pre-test nutritional findings revealed that a little over two-thirds (59 or 65.56%) of the grade five pupils with normal body mass index while others underweight (30 or 33.33%) and over-weight (1 or 1.11%). Six (46 or 59.74%) were normal while four (31 or 40.26%) underweight for every ten pupils. A little over half (91 or 53.22%) needs enhancement in 90 degree push up while the rest (80 or 46.78%) needs improvement. A similar situation for partial curl-up component where 88 or 51.46 percent needs enhancement/ alternatives while others (83 or 48.54%) needs improvement in partial curl-up. The pupils demonstrated improved performance along the nutritional, muscular, flexibility and physiological physical fitness components. Similarly with the sports talent anthropometrics, muscular power and speed. There is a need to sustain the improved performance of pupils along nutritional, muscular, flexibility and physiological physical fitness components. Likewise, the sports talent anthropometrics, muscular power and speed. On flexibility, nine for every ten pupils need improvement either in Sit and Reach right (156 or 91.23%) or left (153 or 89.47%) leg bent while ten percent who needs enhancement. Not a pupil needs improvement in shoulder flexibility right arm up but all of them needs enhancement (171 or 100.00%). Nearly one-third (58 or 33.92%) needs improvement in left arm up while 133 (66.08%) needs enhancement.

Problem Findings Conclusion Recommendation Majority (97 or 56.73%) needs enhancement activities on physiological fitness (1 kilometer run) while nearly forty percent (74 or 43.27%) improvement. Sports talents of the pupils were average in sitting height (112.82 cm) and arm span (136.79 cm) in anthropometrics. Majority or two-thirds registered normal body mass indices especially grade five (60 or 66.67%). However, nearly one-third (30 or 33.33%) were underweight and needs improvement. Of the three muscular components, trunk lift (97 or 56.73%) followed 90 degree push up (95 or 55.56%) and partial curl - up (94 or 54.97%) needs improvement while a little over half to nearly one-half of the pupils need enhancement. This was 2

Problem Findings Conclusion Recommendation not the scenario for flexibility with more of improvement rather than enhancement. Right (148 or 86.55%) an d left (147 or 85.96%) leg bent sit and reach flexibility performance needs improvement rather than enhancement. Not a pupil needs improvement on right shoulder flexibility but all need enhancement. A little over ten percent (22 or 12.87%) needs improvement on left shoulder flexibility while majority (149 or 87.13%) for enhancement. A similar situation holds true for speed in 40-meter sprint (91 or 53.22%) needs enhancement instead of improvement (80 or 46.78%). 2. Is there significant improvement in their performance based on pre-post-test results? a. health related On health-related components, the mean gain as measure of improvement for body mass index was 0.74. Evidence of muscular fitness was observed on 90- Degrees Push Ups (3.47), Partial Curl - Ups (2.62) and Trunk Lift (1.53). Flexibility fitness similarly registered improvement both the left (0.88) and right Improvement is evident in health- and skills-related performance of the pupils. Health- and skills-related activities should be regularly provided to the pupils. 3

Problem Findings Conclusion Recommendation (0.90) leg bent performance. A -0.21 mean gain for left arms-up indicated the physical fitness improvement due to decline in time requirement for flexibility of movement. So with the 1-kilometer run of -0.10 time reduction. b. skill related Anthropometrics was the skills-related with zero mean gain. Standing long jump (4.00) and basketball pass (2.88) under the muscular power registered improvement. There was also the reduction of time for 40-meter sprint difference between the pre- and post-test physical fitness performance. Left ( -10.262), Right ( -10.330) Leg Bent flexibility and Right Arms-up flexibility (6.733) or the 1-kilometer run Physiological Fitness (9.532). Pre -post test in Anthropometrics was not statistic-ally significant but not for muscular power Standing Long Jump ( -15.524) and basketball pass (-12.419) or the 40-Meter Sprint (11.804) speed component. 3. What physical fitness activities can be developed in order to improve the physical fitness performance of the pupils? The proposed physical fitness activities consisted of one hundred twenty-six activities. The physical fitness activities are meant to improve the physical fitness performance of the pupils. The physical fitness activities should be piloted in the district for at least one school year. A similar study should be conducted in other schools/districts. 4
