PLC Paw Prints June 2012 WHAT S HAPPNING Awards PDG and LS&TF President Kathy Fletcher finally tracked down our own PP Tom Seibert at our clubs last meeting. All she wanted to do was present the LS&TF award for "The Most Valuable Person" to Lion Tom for the outstanding service that he brings every time he does Lions work. It is good to be a Lion and be associated with such valuable people. Website Knowledge Lion George Harrington is at it again. In our quest to bring PLC up to speed with our website programs, Lion George is giving hands on instructional programs showing how easy it is to use our website for member and club information. As things continue to move forward,.. our thanks go out to Lion George. District Supported Charities "2-X1 Charities Inc." District 2-X1 Charities Inc. has implemented the "100% Contribution" in order to streamline various contributions and donations made by each club. These contributions are a fixed amount based on the size of the club membership. Lion, Sight and Tissue Foundation is one of those nine 501(c)(3) Charities. Here is something you should know about the organization. The LS&TF is a working Board of Directors made up of 15 members. This Board works with the Lions of District 2-X1 to provide assistance in their communities for people who cannot afford the proper visual care or medical assistance for vision related surgeries. Funds and services are provided by the Lions and Lions Clubs of District 2-X1. Its projects receive support in part from LCIF, ssilor Vision Foundation and Southwest Lens just to name a few. In 2006, the LS&TF purchased a fully equipped Blue Bird Bus. This purchase was made possible from donations from the Lions and Lions Clubs of District 2-X1 and a grant from LCIF. Since acquiring the Mobile Vision Bus, the LS&TF has partnered with VF and DISD to help children in the Dallas School Independent District. Clinics outside of DISD are usually run in conjunction with local Lions Clubs for both children and adults. In the 2010-2011 Lions Year, the LS&TF helped over 4,000 children and adults receive eye exams and eyeglasses. They also helped several individuals receive medical assistance. In order for the LS&TF to continue doing these great services, the Foundation needs the support of the Lions and Lions Clubs of District 2-X1.
WHAT S HAPPNING As we approach our next years budget one of the considerations being made is to fund each of these charities by 200%. For LS&TF this represents $4.00 per member. Over the next several months we will continue to introduce you to each of these charities giving you some insight as to how they work, how much we contribute and how they serve the community. We will also have programs presented at our club meetings giving you the opportunity to ask questions and gain a deeper perspective on how "W SRV". Helen Keller Day June 1st Born Helen Adams Keller on June 27, 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama, USA, the child developed a fever at 18 months of age. Afterwards, Keller was blind, deaf, and mute. At age six, teacher Anne Mansfield Sullivan of the Perkins School for the Blind was hired as Helen Keller's teacher. The 20-year-old taught Keller sign language and Braille. The story of the teacher and her pupil has been retold in William Gibson's play and film, "The Miracle Worker." At age 10, Helen Keller learned to speak. Sarah Fuller of the Horace Mann School was her first speech teacher. In 1898, Helen entered the Cambridge School for Young Ladies. In the autumn of 1900, Keller entered Radcliffe College. She earned a bachelor of arts degree cum laude in 1904. Throughout the years, Sullivan remained at her student's side. She formed letters into Helen Keller's hand for comprehension of textbooks, college lectures, and conversation. In 1915, Helen Keller joined the first Board of Directors of the Permanent Blind Relief War Fund, later known as the American Braille Press. In 1924, the young woman started the Helen Keller ndowment Fund. In the same year, Helen Keller joined the staff of the American Foundation for the Blind as a counselor on national and international relations. On June 30, 1925, Helen Keller addressed the Lions Clubs International Convention in Cedar Point, Ohio, USA. She challenged Lions to become "knights of the blind in this crusade against darkness. "I am your opportunity. I am knocking at your door." In 1946, Helen Keller became a counselor on international relations for the American Foundation for Overseas Blind. She traveled to 35 countries. Helen Keller made her last major public appearance in Washington, D.C., USA, in 1961. She received the Lions Humanitarian Award for lifetime service. Helen Keller died on June 1, 1968 at age 87. Her request to the Lions 43 years earlier inspired Lions Clubs International to adopt the Sight Conservation and Work with the Blind Program as a major service initiative. In 1971, the Lions of Alabama dedicated the Helen Keller Memorial Park. It is located on the grounds of Keller's birthplace which is known as Ivy Green. The focal point of the memorial is a bust of Keller with an engraved plaque which states, "I am your opportunity." World nvironment Day June 5th 2011-2012 International President Wing-Kun Tam has challenged Lions around the world to plant one million trees this year to demonstrate the strength of our global network. So far 9,633,143 trees have been planted. It s no secret that trees help the environment, but you may be surprised by all the benefits that planting a tree can provide. Trees are like the lungs of the planet. They breathe in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen. They also reduce erosion to save soil, help preserve local water sources, and provide habitat for wildlife living under more and more stress. Simply put, planting trees in your neighborhood really is one of the best things you can do for the local environment. Any of us can plant a tree. It s a very visible and hands-on way for each and every Lion to make a difference. It s also a great project to invite your community at-large to join your local Lions club in a collaborative effort. If we can plant a million trees, it will reinforce the limitless potential we all know we have to make a difference as Lions. "There is a plan to this universe. WHAT S HAPPNING Lions 2X-1 University Wow, what a day. We learned so much that we felt like we left 15 lbs. heavier than we started. Some of it was because of the great food we were served but it really was from all that learning we achieved. The program was professionally structured to touch each officer and member in a way that was meant only to help in understanding the responsibilities and role that each of us will play in the continued success of our club. THINGS TO DO Texas Lions Camp 19th Annual Harry Wickersham Golf Tournament - August 2, 2012 If you are a golfer maybe it's time to combine a little business with pleasure. Plan a day to visit the Texas Lions Camp and the next to play in a Florida Scramble Golf tournament at the Tapatio Springs Golf Course 314 Blue Heron Blvd, Boerne, Texas. Show your skills in the longest drive contest or maybe be the closest to the pin on the par threes. If you hit a ball straight (I'd like to meet you personally for some pointers) you can win too. Of course, if you are really good and get a hole in one you could win a car. For the rest of us hackers there is always the door prizes to look forward too. So, take an afternoon and drive 325 miles on down toward old San Antonio and join a bunch of great folks and play some golf and at the same time support one of our biggest charities, the Texas Lions Camp. Clint astwood Lions Sight and Tissue Foundation 4th annual Howard Snyder Golf Tournament - September 18, 2012 Well if you didn't get enough golf at the Texas Lions Camp come join us on Tuesday, September 18th at the Los Rios Golf Course, 1700 Country Club Road, Plano Texas. The format will be a Florida Scramble. You can register as a team or they will assign you to a team. It's only $75.00 per person and this includes range balls, green fees, cart, prizes and lunch. Lunch looks pretty good too. Bar- B-Que buffet with 2 sides, tea or water and an awards ceremony with prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, longest drive, closest to the pin, and two hole in one prizes. There is even a last place prize. For the rest of us there is always hope for a door prize and great fellowship. THINGS TO DO LCI Webinars Webinars are virtual trainings where participants use the Internet to connect with other group members and with the instructors. Participants view a PowerPoint presentation and polling questions on their computer. They listen to the instructors either via their computer speakers or headset. The participants may use the phone or a computer headset with microphone to interact in the discussions and respond to questions. Go to LCI website and open member center, leadership development, then development programs and find webinars to sign up for one of these informative and helpful seminars. Paw Prints will keep you informed as to what is next on their schedule. It helps to be informed and prepared when "W SRV". Things are starting to warm up around our club. The new year is taking shape. Below is a list of programs that we will be supporting for 2012-2013. Take note and put on your work boots and sign up. Remember it's time "TO SRV." July 4th Parade Chair - Lion Tom Seibert "Freedom isn't Free: A Salute to Veterans" will be our theme this year. The relationship between the city, major sponsors and PLC have been established. The programs has been defined. It is time now to make it happen. Our next two meetings in June is when the rubber meets the road and when we will need to step up to meet the challenge. In addition, a new event was proposed and approved to involve the youth of the community. A bicycle and wagon decorating category will be implemented. Lions Dora, arl and Mike will be heading up this part of the program. So be there or be square. Sign up for your assignment. The date has been finalized for October 6th. The basic format is being worked on. There will not only be a dog show but also vendor tents, training sessions and refreshments. LHP Promotes Healthy Vision Did you know that vision loss is not a normal part of aging? But, as you get older, you're at a higher risk of developing eye diseases and conditions leading to vision loss or blindness. The Lions ye Health Program (LHP) can help your club promote healthy vision in your community. The LHP "Making Vision a Health Priority" and "Age-Related ye Diseases and Conditions" toolkits are userfriendly resources you can distribute at community events. The Lions ye Health Program (LHP) is a community-based education program empowering Lions to promote healthy vision and raise awareness of the causes of preventable vision loss. If you are interested in participating go to LCI website and search LHP, Lions ye Health Program. Camp New Horizons June 11-15 Camp New Horizons North - Story Book Ranch, 1701 S Custer Rd, McKinney Texas June 18-22 Camp New Horizon South - Southern Cross Ranch, 1800 W Dowdy Ferry Rd, Dallas Texas. Lions will be supplying snacks for the children each day and providing a fish day on Thursday June 21, for the South Camp. On Friday June 15 and Friday June 22 Lions will provide Hamburgers and Hot Dogs for both the North and South Camp. We need volunteers to help with the fishing at the South Camp on Thursday and for Friday at both the North and South Camps for the cookout.
