Texting and Driving Statistics Drunk Driving Statistics Car crashes are the number one cause of death for everyone in the U.S. ages 5-34, with teens crashing three times more often than any other age group. (CDC, Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) Alcohol-impaired driving fatalities accounted for 31% of the total vehicle traffic fatalities in 2011. (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) Texting while driving makes a driver 23x more likely to crash, and is about six times more likely to cause an accident than driving while intoxicated. (NHTSA, VA Tech Transportation Institute) Sending or receiving a text takes a driver s eyes from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds, the equivalentat 55 mph- of driving the length of an entire football field, blind. (VTTI) Car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens, and about a quarter involve an underage drinking driver. (NHTSA) One in six teens binge drink. Only 1 in 100 parents believes his or her teen binge drinks. (Institute of Medicine) Every day in America, another 27 people die as a result of drunk driving crashes. On average, one in three people will be involved in a drunk driving crash in their lifetime. (NHTSA) Texting and driving kills 11 teens each day. (IIHS)
