2 Mission Since beginning in 1980, MADD has evolved into one of the most widely supported and wellliked non-profit organizations in America. MADD fights out against drunk driving and for victim s rights. Candy Lightener founded MADD following the death of her 13-year-old daughter in California when her daughter was walking to a school carnival when a drunk driver had struck her from behind. The driver had three prior drunk driving convictions and was out on bail from a hit and run arrest two days earlier. Key Publics Victims and survivors of drunk driving accidents. Birch will retire in June of His predecessor has not been announced yet. MADD has grown tremendously with the leadership from Glynn, said Kari Kinnard, executive director for MADD Wisconsin. Thanks to a new national campaign to eliminate drunk driving, one of the nation s deadliest crimes, sponsored by MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving). The real possibility of eliminating drunk driving in our country is a powerful idea, said Glynn Birch, National President of MADD. We hope to use technology to our advantage and get law enforcement more involved to help get rid of this deadly crime. MADD s new program has three main parts to achieve its objective. They want law enforcement to have a more visible presence in the community including more sobriety checkpoints. The 2 nd annual Strides for Change 5K walk will be held at Veteran s Memorial Park on Saturday June 9 at 9 a.m. The Strides for Change walk is a vital fundraising campaign we do at MADD, said Glynn Birch, national president of MADD. It s important to raise awareness about this violent crime in our community. Alcohol related car crashes kill about one person every 30 minutes. This is the second annual walk in Milwaukee. Funds from the walk will provide support programs to help victims cope with the loss of their tragedy. In addition, funds will be provided to local law enforcement for equipment to better detect and arrest drunk drivers.
