NORTH CAROLINA CAREER DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION Spring/Summer 2017 Newsletter 6.5.2017 GREETINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT AND PAST-PRESIDENT Dear NCCDA Members, It has been a pleasure to serve as your President during the 2016-2017 year. NCCDA is an organization filled with wonderful, caring, dedicated, and energetic individuals. YOU make NCCDA the great organization that it is. Our annual fall conference was a big success that was a fun-filled learning opportunity. Be on the lookout for this year s fall conference in October. NCCDA continues to represent at the national level for the Poetry and Poster contest with winners every year. Our social media, LinkedIn and Facebook, serves as great places for you to keep up with all things related to NCCDA. As I step down into the role of Past President, feel free to reach out and connect with me. I always enjoy meeting NCCDA members and talking about all things career development. Have a great summer! Sincerely, Christy Dunston Past President, 2017-2018 President, 2016-2017 Greetings, NCCDA Members! I hope that you are enjoying the start to the summer, and hope that you will find time for some well-deserved self-care and relaxation with friends and family! It was a pleasure to see so many of you at our Fall 2016 conference. I thoroughly enjoyed working with our board as our Conference Chair & President-Elect last year, and I am honored and excited to serve as your 2017-2018 President. I am excited to continue our important work with the amazing professionals that make this organization great. Be on the lookout for details on this year s conference, as well as other upcoming events, such as our Morning Musings get-togethers we ll be sending information out on those soon. I hope to see many of you at the upcoming NCDA conference in Orlando, as well! If you have interest in getting more involved with NCCDA this year, please let me know. I look forward to working with each of you in the coming year! Warm Regards, Jane Matthews President, 2017-18 Conference Chair & President-Elect, 2016-17 1

LOOKING BACK TO GO FORWARD Last year s conference theme of The Joy of Work helped us to reflect on why we love our profession and being a part of NCCDA. As we say goodbye! to this past year of membership and say hello! to the new one, we are looking forward to engaging with new and returning members. Last year we sent a survey to you asking what you have gained from your NCCDA membership so far and what else you would like to gain in the future. Your responses told us that you would like to get more information on best practices, particularly for the population of students each of you work with. As our profession is ever changing, it is not surprising that staying on top of new trends, research-based strategies, and best practices are a top priority. We hear you! We will be making this the focus of this year s conference and membership initiatives. Our Member Spotlight will focus on this as we will be asking you to share your best practices and strategies from your career toolbox, because what better way to stay informed than to ask the brilliant group we have in this organization? Stay tuned for more updates this summer and fall! To our surprise (okay, not really) the opportunity to network and build relationships with each other was one of the most frequent comments made about what members have gained from NCCDA. It makes us feel like we re part of something bigger in this state and the opportunity to press pause on our busy schedules in the fall for a day to gather for learning s sake energizes us. Let s continue this trend this coming year! Are you making plans to relax and refresh yourself this summer? Don t forget to take a minute to refresh your professional memberships too! The NCCDA year changes on July 1 st so renew now to avoid a lapse in your membership. Please share this membership invitation with your colleagues, and we look forward to connecting with you again in the coming year! Submitted by Mary Rosage & Katie Peterssen NCCDA Membership Co-Chairs DID YOU KNOW? 2

NCCDA GIVES BACK NCCDA continues to give a helping hand to those in need. During the Fall Conference, members donated dozens of bags of canned goods, non-perishable items, and toiletries to the Greensboro branch of the Salvation Army. This branch was able to replenish many of the items needed for members during the upcoming holiday season. This year, NCCDA branched out with another career organization to give back. For the first time, members of both NCCDA and NCACE paired up for a Day of Service. On December 2, 18 volunteers teamed up to serve in the Durham, Charlotte, Asheville-Buncombe County, and Greensboro branches of the Salvation Army. Members helped to organize the Angel Tree, stock and organize food pantry donations, and assisted with other administrative tasks. Thank you to all who served in the name of NCCDA. Your kindness is much appreciated. Submitted by Christy Walker Community Outreach Chair, 2016-2017 Feedback from Salvation Army employees was overwhelmingly positive. Your volunteers were amazing today... I cannot thank you enough!!!!!! - Greensboro Employee Thanks for all of the work your team did for us - WOW - we are so impressed! - Durham Employee COME JOIN US IN ORLANDO!
