Our Presenter: Lisa Najavits, Ph.D. Lisa Najavits, PhD, is professor of psychiatry at Boston University School of Medicine, adjunct professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and a clinical research psychologist in the Veterans Affairs Healthcare System. Her clinical and research interests are substance abuse, trauma, comorbidity, behavioral addictions, veterans' mental health, community-based care, development of new psychotherapies, and outcome research. She is author of over 190 professional publications, as well as the books Seeking Safety, A Woman's Addiction Workbook, and Recovery from Trauma, Addiction or Both: Finding Your Best Self. She has served as president of the Society of Addiction Psychology of the American Psychological Association, and was the recipient of the 2009 Betty Ford Award of the Addiction Medical Education and Research Association. She is a licensed psychologist and received her PhD in clinical psychology from Vanderbilt University. Welcome to the West Virginia Psychological Association Spring Conference! This year, we offer a training for behavioral health providers of all professions, in an effort to combat the substance abuse problems in our state. Indeed, we are stronger together. We are so grateful to Dr. Lisa Najavitz for traveling to West Virginia for such an important cause. As evident in her biography and credentials, Dr. Najavitz is a world renowned expert in treating trauma and substance related disorders, as well as the creator of the Seeking Safety model of treatment. Conference Schedule at a Glance Friday, April 27, 2018 Registration Opens: 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM Session: Trauma Informed Care & Seeking Safety 9:00 AM - 4:30 PM Refreshment break 10:30 AM - 10:45 AM Lunch break (on your own) 12:00-1:00 PM Refreshment break 2:45 PM - 3:00 PM Annual Business Meeting (for WVPA Members) 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM Trauma Informed Care & Seeking Safety Lisa Najavits, Ph.D. Introductory: 6.0 CE This presentation explores the general principles of treating traumatized clients with substance related disorders in a variety of contexts (e.g., substance abuse, mental health, medical, etc.). Basic information on trauma, PTSD, and trauma counseling is provided. Real-world challenges are emphasized, including power struggles, threatened harm to self or others, reenactment of classic trauma roles, etc. Assessment and treatment resources are provided. An overview of the Seeking Safety model, how to implement it, demonstration of a session, video clips and experiential exercises are explored. Learning Objectives: 1. Learn how to implement Seeking Safety with adults and/or adolescents 2. Review research and clinical issues in treating trauma and substance abuse 3. Increase empathy and understanding of trauma and substance abuse 4. Learn how to conduct Seeking Safety, an evidence-based model for trauma and/or substance abuse 5. Obtain assessment and treatment resources

Meals Included in the full conference registration fee are: continental breakfast and two refreshment breaks. Participants are responsible for their own lunch meal. The Memorial Student Center offers a first floor food court and a Buffet-style restaurant (John Marshall Room) on the 2nd floor. APA Standards for awarding credit prohibit offering variable credit for partial workshop attendance. Those arriving late or leaving a workshop early will not receive CE credit. The WVPA maintains responsibility for this program and its contents. Please allow time to sign-in for CE before class is scheduled to begin. You must return a FULLY COMPLETED evaluation form to receive your CE Certificate. The West Virginia Psychological Association (WVPA) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologist. WVPA maintains responsibility for this program and its contents. CE Credits for Non-Psychologists CEU s for Licensed Professional Counselors, Addiction and Prevention Professionals, Nursing, and Social Work are available (provided by the WV Bureau for Behavioral Health and Health Facilities). Cancellation Policy Please pre-register before April 23, 2018. Sorry but we are not able to issue refunds nor exchanges to another training date or location. However, if you register and are unable to attend you may transfer your registration for this training (same date, same location) to another person. Please email orders@seekingsafety.org with the subject line "Transfer Registration" and include your contact information as well as the information of the person you are transferring the registration to. Also if you ordered a book but are unable to attend, you can pick it up from the training location at a later date (email us and we'll put you in touch with them). Grievance Procedures The West Virginia Psychological Association (WVPA) is fully committed to conducting all activities in strict conformance with the American Psychological Association s Ethical Principles of Psychologists. When a participant, either orally or in written format, files a grievance and expects action on the complaint, the following actions will be taken. 1. If the grievance concerns a speaker, the content presented by the speaker, or the style of presentation, the individual filing the grievance will be asked to put his/ her comments in written format. The CE Chair will then pass on the comments to the speaker, assuring the confidentiality of the grieved individual. 2. If the grievance concerns a workshop offering, its content, level of presentation, or the facilities in which the workshop was offered, the convention chair will mediate and will be the final arbitrator. If the participant requests action, the convention chair will: a. attempt to move the participant to another workshop or b. provide a credit for a subsequent year s workshop or c. provide a partial or full refund of the work shop fee. Actions 2b and 2c will require a written note, documenting the grievance, for record keeping purposes. The note need not be signed by the grieved individual. 3. If the grievance concerns a WVPA CE program, in a specific regard, the CE Chair will attempt to arbitrate.
