Wellness Advisory Council Our Vision The University of Miami is recognized as a national wellness leader through our Well Canes program. We value wellness as a core component of personal and institutional success; therefore, our environment actively inspires a lifelong commitment to a healthy mind, body, and spirit. Our Philosophy The University of Miami is committed to promoting employee health, healthy lifestyles and active participation in wellness programs. This Wellness Philosophy establishes the framework and expectations for promoting and actively supporting health, a healthy lifestyle, and a culture where wellness is valued. 3
Wellness Advisory Council Our Purpose To embrace the importance of multi-dimensional wellness programs to meet the diverse needs of our faculty, staff and their dependents. Our Focus INTERPERSONAL PHYSICAL WORKPLACE (Occupational) PSYCHOLOGICAL Strategic alignment, consultation and leadership, in developing, promoting and supporting the policies and programs necessary to create a culture of wellness at the University. Wellness Advisory Council Our Scope of Activity Develop, implement and maintain a University-wide Wellness strategic plan Advocate for leadership s support of wellness policies and programs, and a culture that actively supports a healthy workforce Articulate and communicate the vision, philosophy, goals, and accomplishments of wellness initiatives and programs Recommend budget to support programs and initiatives identified in the strategic plan Collaborate with University and external resources to identify best practices and develop evidence-based interventions that meet data driven needs 5

Critical Components Vision of Success: Adopting a Culture of Wellness at UM Guiding Principles Employee Employer UHealth Ownership Aware of University wellness activities and initiatives. Understand how their daily interactions can support a change in culture. Foster senior leadership, departmental and supervisorlevel commitment to culture of wellness. Secure engagement through inclusion of wellness as a leadership competency. Promote wellness to patients through emphasis on preventive care and holistic wellness. Participation Participate in wellness opportunities whenever possible. Actively work to maintain or increase level of health. Provide opportunities throughout the year to engage our diverse workforce in wellness, including worksite wellness week. Provide opportunities for clinical staff to engage in wellness activities targeted to caregivers. Engagement Create and nurture relationships with health professionals (mental, physical). Communicate continuously using various media to engage all populations. Provide outreach and education to UM family and local community. 7
Wellness Initiatives 8
2013 Wellness Initiatives #1 Health Education Campaign Monthly wellness article in e-veritas and eupdate with wellness tips that focus on that particular month s dimension. Article will include one-minute video with relevant wellness tips. #2 Wellness Incentives Expanded incentive program to encourage wellness engagement. More ways to earn incentives year round with website to track one s progress. #3 Week of Wellbeing April 1-5 - Inaugural Wellness Week to take place on Gables and medical campuses, concurrent with National Worksite Wellness Week. Various seminars, activities and workshops to focus on all dimensions of wellness. Week will begin with celebrity chef appearance, hosted by Fidelity Investments. #4 Nutrition Education Campaign to educate faculty and staff on how to read food labels. Also discussing with Chartwells how best to encourage the purchase of healthy food options for catering orders. #5 Stair Initiative New permanent signage to encourage use of stairs over elevators. Communication campaign to promote stair usage through UMove initiative. 9
