Fatty acid product guide Kraton Corporation s Sylfat and Century fatty acids are useful in a wide range of industrial applications. These fatty acids (tall oil fatty acid, monomer acid, stearic acid and isostearic acid) each have unique degrees of unsaturation and fatty acid distribution, making one of them suitable for almost any application where C18 fatty acids are required. As the world s largest biorefiner of Crude Tall Oil, Kraton Corporation is in a unique position to secure its primary feedstock. Kraton has developed secure supplier relationships over time, ensuring an uninterrupted supply of Crude Tall Oil, and thus the ability to reliably supply our global customer base with the required fatty acid product.

PRODUCT PROPERTIES Sustainability Did you know Kraton Corporation's Sylfat and Century product lines are made from raw materials that are primarily obtained from renewable forests, and thus contain 100% BRC (Bio-renewable content). The BRC for alternative petroleum-based technologies typically ranges from 20%-60%. And, while some edible oils-based competitors claim 100% BRC, the fact is there are climate change and carbon footprint disad vantages inherent in food-based materials. Did you know that Kraton has set Energy Reduction Goals targeting 5% per year through 2015? This is in North America alone! Application Description The functionality of the carboxylic group of the fatty acids can be reacted with amines to form Alkyd Resins new amines or amides as well as imidazolines. This same functional group is readily reacted with mono-, di-, and poly alcohols to form esters offering unique properties. The sites of unsaturation in the backbone of the carbon chain can be utilized in Diels- Alder reactions. Dimer acids can be produced from tall oil fatty acid either thermally or catalytically. When Sylfat fatty acids are reacted with anhydrides and polyols, polyesters suitable for all three coating types (long, medium & short) can be produced. In applications where color is important Sylfat FA1 Special or Sylfat FA2 are suggested. Color sensitive applications may be formulated with Sylfat FA2 or FA1 Special.

Asphalt Emulsions Asphalt emulsions are classified based on their ionic charge; anionic, cationic and nonionic. Anionic and cationic are commonly used in roadway construction and maintenance. Anionic emulsions are usually TOFA sodium or potassium salts. Cationic emulsions can be made when using TOFA amines reacted with acrylonitrile to form diamines. The TOFA salt functions as a surfactant to disperse the asphalt in the water. Epoxy Ester Resins Epoxy ester resins are widely used as coating materials and structural materials because of their chemical and water resistance and mechanical properties. They are usually produced by esterifying an epoxy compound with an unsaturated carboxylic acid in the presence of a catalyst and can be combined with additional compounds to impart specific properties. Ester Solvents Fatty acid esters with various mono-alcohols are used as ink solvents in lithographic printing inks and press washes. These esters are used as solvents to formulate other cleaning fluids, as well as in the production of sand castings. Fatty acid esters with diols or polyols can be used as plasticizers in a variety of applications. Fuel Additives Methyl esters of TOFA provide lubricity to low sulfur fuels which reduces the wear of mechanical parts in the fuel delivery system. Sylfat 2 or FA2 is preferred for fuel additive applications due to lubricity requirements. Lubricant Additives Lubricants typically are formulated to include additives performing special functions such as rust inhibitors, anti-wear agents, friction modifiers, and gelling agents. Rust Inhibitors Long chain amines Anti-wear Agents Sulfurized fats Friction Modifiers fatty acids, fatty acid esters, fatty amines and amides These same additives are also applicable to grease. Plasticizers for Rubber TOFA derivatives are used as plasticizers in rubber to aid in compounding. An example is TOFA derivatized with a poly alcohol can be used as a plasticizer for rubber to prevent the build up of electrostatic charges. TOFA, TOFA amides, and TOFA metallic salts can be used as release aids.

Mineral Processing Fatty Acid use in mining includes functions such as flotation reagents, frothers, and defoamers. The grade required is dependant on the intended use, the ore being processed, and the quality of the ore. Oilfield Chemicals TOFA finds utility as a component in drilling mud applications. TOFA derivatives such as amines and imidazolines commonly function as a corrosion inhibitor. The higher rosin grades are typically used. Specialty Industrial and Household Cleaners Soaps may be made from any of the Sylfat or Century products alone or in combination with distilled tall oils or rosins. Uses of Arizona derived soaps cover; general industrial cleaning, solvent removal and applications in waterless hand cleaners. Textiles TOFA derivatives such as amines and imidazolines find use as textile lubricants, softeners, and antistatic agents.
