Mid-Lakes Orchid Society May Meeting Mid-Lakes Orchid Society April 2017 Art Chadwick Jr. from Chadwick & Son Orchids in Richmond, VA will be the speaker at the May meeting. Art & his father are world-renowned for their cattleya hybrids. His book, The Classic Cattleya is one of the best books on large-flowered cattleyas. He has even named cattleya hybrids after the wives of the last five U.S. Presidents. He will have some of his cattleya hybrids for sale at the meeting. Mid-Lakes Orchid Society Page 2 Secretary s Report MLOS Monthly Meeting April 11, 2017 The meeting was called to order by our president, Ken Carter, at 7:00 p.m. followed by the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. Three guests were welcomed to our meeting. The secretary's minutes and the treasurer s report were accepted as presented in the newsletter. Wally Wilder presented his Wally report on his findings of wild Florida orchids. He also shared photos of his sightings. Suzanne Farnsworth thanked the members that participated in the MLOS auction in March. Suzanne also announced that the MLOS potting clinic will take place on April 22, 2017 at Simon Seed in Leesburg & that Volusia County Orchid Society is having an orchid sale on Mother s Day, May 14, 2017 from 10:00 a.m 1:00 p.m. Ken Carter presented the revised MLOS slate of officers & directors for the 2017-2018 year: President: Ann Parrish Vice President: Brian Behm Secretary: Chuck Goodson Treasurer: Nancy Gassler Newsletter: Barbara Wertz Refreshments: Karen Morgeson Membership: Rosemary Arnieri 1-Year Directors: Marge Fantozzi & Mike Sielaff 2-Year Directors: Mary Yatsko & Jack Batchelor The mounting an orchid program for the evening was explained by Suzanne Farnsworth; the orchids & supplies were provided by Brian Behm. Suzanne helped the members to cor- rectly mount their plants on wood. Show-n-Tell was presented by Jack Batchelor & Mike Sielaff followed by the raffle with Gerry & Marion. Snacks were provided by Deb Embry & Pat Socall; drinks by Ken Carter & ice by Julia Allen. There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Julia H. Mid-Lakes Orchid Society Page 4 Information for New Members Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month from September June at the Employee Wellness Center in Leesburg. April Show n-tell Photos Meetings usually include a business meeting, guest speaker, refreshments, show & tell plants and a raffle. Speakers often bring plants and/or supplies for sale. Orchid books are available for check-out at each meeting. December & June meetings include a covered dish buffet with meats provided by the Society. Each Fall & Spring a fundraiser auction is conducted. Members who contribute plants can get a share of the sale price. A potting clinic, that is held at a nearby garden center, is also a fund raiser. The Society has many knowledgeable, experienced members who are happy to share information with newcomers. DUES Singles: $15.00 Couples: $20.00 Families: $25.00 Each membership year begins in September. President s Corner A great big THANK YOU to Ann Parrish who agreed to be the MLOS President next year. Also a big THANK YOU to Karen Morgeson who volunteered to be the refreshment chair. Please remember that we will be voting on this slate at the May 9 meeting.
