K. Submitted Publications L. Summary of my Activities and Future Plans Below I describe my accomplishments and future plans for each of my research areas: (1) Evidence-Based Family Therapy for Eating Disorders. (2) Women's eating patterns and body image, with a specific focus on midlife women. (3) Eating Disorders among victims of Child Sexual Abuse. Evidence-Based Family Therapy for Eating Disorders I am a researcher and a family therapist. I am currently developing a short-term treatment modality for eating disorders that is grounded in viewing the individual as part of her/his family and in viewing family therapy as one of the most important tools that can help individuals change their eating patterns. From 2012 until June of 2014 I practiced and studied family-based treatment (FBT) for eating disorders under the guidance of Professor Daniel Le Grange, one of the leading scholars in the field of family therapy and eating disorders. I was fortunate to join Le Grange's lab at the University of Chicago (Department of Psychiatry) in order to conduct FBT as a therapist in a Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT). This RCT (funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH)) was designed to investigate adaptations in FBT for adolescents with anorexia nervosa. In addition to being a therapist in this RCT, I was also privileged to take part in Professor Le Grange's lab's research efforts by conducting three independent studies. I believe that the scientific knowledge I gained while working with Professor Le Grange and his team will continue to serve me well as I develop my own independent research of evidence-based treatments as a faculty member in the School of Public Health (University of Haifa). More specifically, I wish to continue with this line of research in order to become one of the first scholars to conduct an RCT in (and in Hebrew) that is aimed at comparing FBT modalities designed to treat eating disorder patients of various ages. Women's Eating Patterns and Body Image: From Midlife to Older Age 8 מתוך 9
Recently, I have been interested in women's eating patterns and body image in midlife and beyond, with a specific focus on eating disorders. I decided to study this particular age group since the great majority of the existing research on eating disorders has focused on adolescents and young adults. There is thus a gap in knowledge regarding the specific presentation of eating disorders and their correlates in midlife and beyond. I joined the Bob Shapell School of Social Work (Tel Aviv University) as a postdoctoral research fellow (2014-2015) in order to expand my research on eating disorders among older women. I am fortunate to be conducting my postdoctoral research with the guidance of Professor Yael Benyamini, with whom I have already co-authored two manuscripts (see below). The first manuscript focuses on eating disorders in midlife while the second manuscript focuses on the correlates of subjective weight perception (and mis-perception) among overweight/obese midlife women. I am looking forward to taking part in the longitudinal part of this study, which is expected to reveal how their body image and weight-related concerns evolved as they reached older age. I plan to continue conducting research about body image and eating disorders among women as they age. A research proposal that I co-authored with Professor Benyamini, and in collaboration with the Women's Health unit at the Gertner Institute for Epidemiology and Health Policy Research, was already approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of the Sheba Medical Center. This research is a longitudinal study addressing body image and eating disorders among women 55-74 years of age, who were interviewed about ten years ago by the Women s Health in Midlife National Study in. Eating Disorders among Victims of Child Sexual Abuse As the director of Ella treatment center for trauma and child sexual abuse (The i Ministry of Welfare) I provide short-term treatment (crisis intervention) for survivors of incest and child sexual abuse. I am currently working with my research assistant to collect scientific data (i.e., questioners) from these survivors in order to evaluate the treatment that we provide. Furthermore, the aim of our study is to compare the clinical presentation of child sexual abuse survivors with and without eating disorders. 9 מתוך 9
In summary, my future research plans are intertwined with my clinical and scientific background. I wish to continue studying women in the context of their families, with a focus on eating disorders, child sexual abuse, and age-related transitions (e.g., midlife, ageing). Moreover, I wish to help bridge the gap between practice and research by carrying out research studies that will help develop evidenced-based practices (especially in the field of family therapy and eating disorders) for nutritionists and dietitians. 10 מתוך 9
