Our purpose and responsibility is to shape our members skills and understanding of spine principles; to establish new values and incentives for the creation of knowledge, the sharing of wisdom, and the development of new tools and techniques that improve patient care, patient outcomes, and the cost effectiveness of spine surgery. Excellence in Spine

AOSpine Scoliosis Week, Kochi, Kerala, 2011 3 Welcome to Kochi Dear colleagues, AO International has been pioneering educational research over the last half a century and since its inception AOSpine has also played a pivotal role implementing these principles of Teaching and Learning. In the Asia-Pacific region several academic events have been designed to fulfill these revolutionary concepts. The Interactive Spine Surgery Week is one such programme. The fifth of this series is scheduled to be held between 03rd and 09th April, 2011 in Kochi, Kerala. This course is designed as a residential week to provide the participant with a comprehensive exposure to a single spine pathology. The current week will address the topic of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis. The general objectives of the course would be to enhance the knowledge and skills of the participating surgeons in paediatric spinal deformity surgery. The specific outcome measures of this course would be the ability: To understand and recall the etiology, natural history and predicting progression in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis. To discuss and implement non operative management in AIS cases. To interpret and apply classification systems in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis. To make clinical decisions in a given case of AIS in terms of surgical planning including determining fusion levels. To comprehend and reproduce effectively concepts of spinal imbalance and other postop complications. Anaesthetic issues, pulmonary function testing, neurology monitoring and transfusion requirements in deformity surgery Each participant will get an opportunity to scrub-in at least for one case and will participate in the interactive telecast of all other surgeries. The total number of participants is restricted to 12 to ensure optimum faculty interaction on the course. Selection for the course will be done by telephonic interview of those who express an interest to train in deformity surgery. Please make sure that the entry requirements are strictly complied with. We have also envisaged live telecasts of lectures by a panel of international experts on deformity surgery. I hope you will avail of this opportunity to upgrade your surgical repertoire.
