2 Welcome from the course director WELCOME Welcome to the Simulated Bioskills Course 2016 Dear Colleagues, On behalf of AOSpine, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the Advanced Level Simulated Bioskills Course sessions an AOSpine educational highlight at the Davos Courses This simulated bioskills course is designed to provide you with an extraordinary learning experience. The course s interactive, case-based learning format presents the latest teaching system technology, and includes a 1:1 hands-on session at the bioskill simulator. In addition, the low, 3:1 participant to faculty ratio creates an exceptional setting for advanced learning. 3 Education AOSpine Curriculum A framework for continuing professional development to meet your lifelong learning needs Educational content based on competencies and learning outcomes across six areas of pathology Delivered through: Face-face education (eg. courses, symposia and fellowships) Online learning (eg. webinars & webcasts, online forums and elearning modules) Resources (eg. videos, books & journals, mobile apps and AO Surgery Reference) 6
4 Course Format COURSE FORMAT Goals of the Course This course aims to develop skills in minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS) focusing on microsurgical decompression and fusion procedures for treating degenerative conditions of the lumbar spine and to perform safe neural manipulation. It also focuses on an evidence-based approach to common degenerative disorders holistic treatment planning, and the management of complications. Target audience Senior residents, fellows, and surgeons in the early years of their career who: Have at least five years of experience in performing spine surgery Have completed the AOSpine Principles course or equivalent, and have time to complete three hours of online activities before the course Are able and willing to communicate well in English, and to discuss cases in an open manner Course objectives On completion of this course, participants will be better able to: Formulate an appropriate operative treatment plan for common degenerative disorders Perform safe entry into the lumbar spinal canal, manipulation of the dura and nerve roots, and discectomy Carry out the operative steps in microsurgical decompression of the lumbar spine Carry out the operative steps in fusion procedures in the lumbar spine, especially TLIF Use 2-D navigation for MIS pedicle screw placement Manage complications and repair a durotomy Use an operating microscope to optimize the outcomes of microsurgical and fusion procedures Course description This course features simulated bioskills exercises to practice several key microsurgical decompression and fusion procedures for the lumbar spine using a model simulator, an operating microscope, and instrumentation. It also features small group discussions, where groups of participants discuss cases with the expert faculty. Online pre-course activities This blended learning event uses online pre-course activities to ensure that all participants have a common basic knowledge of the content. 7

8 Course information COURSE INFORMATION Accommodation Please refer to the event page for more information about accommodation and special hotel rates for Davos Course participants. Accreditation An application has been made to the UEMS-EACCME for CME accreditation of this event. All AOSpine courses apply the same pre-evaluation, onsite and post-evaluation process, with audience response system (ARS). This will help AOSpine to ensure that we continue to meet your training needs. Insurance The course organization does not take out insurance to cover any individual against accidents, theft, or other risks. Mobile phone and camera use The use of mobile phones and cameras is strictly prohibited in the lecture halls and during practical exercises. Social evenings The AOSpine Meet Your Faculty reception will take place on Monday, December 12, at the restaurant Extrablatt, next to the Congress Center, following the scientific sessions. AO World Night, where participants can interact with participants and faculty from other clinical divisions, will take place on Tuesday, December 13, in the Congress Center. Travel by car Davos is located in the heart of Grisons (Graubunden) in the east of Switzerland, about 150 km from Zurich. It takes approximately two hours from Zurich. Four wheel drive and winter tires are strongly recommended at this time of the year. Depending on road conditions, you may need snow chains on the last few kilometers. Travel by plane The nearest airport is Zurich Airport. From there you can travel to Davos either by train or by car. Travel by train A regular train service will conveniently take you from Zurich main station or Zurich Airport to Davos Platz; travel time is approximately three hours.
