DEFINITION OF PRODUCE STANDARD FOR POMEGRANATE (CODEX STAN 310-2013) This Standard applies t fruits f cmmercial varieties f pmegranates grwn frm Punica granatum L., f the Punicaceae family, t be supplied fresh t the cnsumer after preparatin and packaging. Pmegranates fr industrial prcessing are excluded. 2. PROVISIONS CONCERNING QUALITY 2.1 MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS In all classes, subject t the special prvisins fr each class and the tlerances allwed, the pmegranates must be: whle; sund; prduce affected by rtting r deteriratin such as t make it unfit fr cnsumptin is excluded; clean, free f any visible freign matter; free f pests and damage caused by them affecting the general appearance f the prduce; free f abnrmal external misture, excluding cndensatin fllwing remval frm cld strage; free f any freign smell and/r taste; free f damage caused by frst; free f damage caused by lw and/r high temperatures; free f sunburns affecting the arils f the fruit. 2.1.1 The pmegranates must have reached an apprpriate degree f develpment and ripeness in accrdance with criteria prper t the varieties and t the area in which they are grwn. The develpment and cnditin f the pmegranates must be such as t enable them: t withstand transprt and handling; and t arrive in satisfactry cnditin at the place f destinatin. 2.2 CLASSIFICATION Pmegranates are classified in three classes as defined belw: 2.2.1 Extra Class Pmegranates in this class must be f superir quality. They must be characteristic f the variety. They must be free f defects, with the exceptin f very slight superficial defects, prvided these d nt affect the general appearance f the prduce, the quality, the keeping quality and presentatin in the package.
CODEX STAN 310-2013 Page 2 f 5 2.2.2 Class I Pmegranates in this class must be f gd quality. They must be characteristic f the variety. The fllwing slight defects, hwever, may be allwed, prvided these d nt affect the general appearance f the prduce, the quality, the keeping quality and presentatin in the package: - slight defects in shape; - slight defects in clring; - slight skin defects including cracking. The defects must nt, in any case, affect the arils f the fruit. 2.2.3 Class II This class includes pmegranates which d nt qualify fr inclusin in the higher classes, but satisfy the minimum requirements specified in Sectin 2.1 abve. The fllwing defects, hwever, may be allwed, prvided the pmegranates retain their essential characteristics as regards the quality, the keeping quality and presentatin: defects in shape; defects in clring; skin defects including cracking. The defects must nt, in any case, affect the arils f the fruit. 3. PROVISIONS CONCERNING SIZING Pmegranate may be sized by cunt, diameter r weight in accrdance with existing cmmercial trading practices. When such is the case, the package must be labelled accrdingly. A. When sized by cunt, size is determined by the number f individual fruit per package. B. Pmegranate may be sized by diameter (the maximum diameter f the equatrial sectin f each fruit). PROVISIONS CONCERNING TOLERANCES Tlerances in respect f quality and size shall be allwed in each package fr prduce nt satisfying the requirements f the class indicated. 4.1 QUALITY TOLERANCES 4.1.1 Extra Class Five percent by number r weight f pmegranates nt satisfying the requirements f the class, but meeting thse f Class I r, exceptinally, cming within the tlerances f that class. 4.1.2 Class I Ten percent by number r weight f pmegranates nt satisfying the requirements f the class, but meeting thse f Class II r, exceptinally, cming within the tlerances f that class. 4.1.3 Class II Ten percent by number r weight f pmegrantes satisfying neither the requirements f the class nr the minimum requirements, with the exceptin f prduce affected by rtting r any ther deteriratin rendering it unfit fr cnsumptin. 4.2 SIZE TOLERANCES Fr all classes, 10% by number r weight f pmegranates crrespnding t the size immediately abve and/r belw that indicated n the package. 5. PROVISIONS CONCERNING PRESENTATION 5.1 UNIFORMITY The cntents f each package must be unifrm and cntain nly pmegranates f the same rigin, variety, quality and size (if sized). Sales packages may cntain mixtures f varieties f different clrs and sizes prvided they are unifrm in quality and fr each variety cncerned, its rigin. The visible part f the cntents f the package must be representative f the entire cntents.
CODEX STAN 310-2013 Page 4 f 5 5.2 PACKAGING Pmegranates must be packed in such a way as t prtect the prduce prperly. The materials used inside the package must be new 1, clean, and f a quality such as t avid causing any external r internal damage t the prduce. The use f materials, particularly f paper r stamps bearing trade specificatins is allwed, prvided the printing r labelling has been dne with nn-txic ink r glue. Pmegranates shall be packed in each cntainer in cmpliance with the Cde f Practice fr Packaging and Transprt f Fresh Fruits and Vegetables (CAC/RCP 44-1995). 5.2.1 Descriptin f Cntainers The cntainers shall meet the quality, hygiene, ventilatin and resistance characteristics t ensure suitable handling, shipping and preserving f the pmegranates. Packages must be free f all freign matter and smell. 6. MARKING OR LABELLING 6.1 CONSUMER PACKAGES In additin t the requirements f the General Standard fr the Labelling f Prepackaged Fds (CODEX STAN 1-1985), the fllwing specific prvisins apply: 6.1.1 Nature f Prduce If the prduce is nt visible frm the utside, each package shall be labelled as t the name f the prduce and may be labelled as t name f the variety, class, size (if sized) expressed in accrdance with any ne f the fllwing methds: cunt, size cde and range, size range. 6.2 NON-RETAIL CONTAINERS Each package must bear the fllwing particulars, in letters gruped n the same side, legibly and indelibly marked, and visible frm the utside, r in the dcuments accmpanying the shipment. 6.2.1 Identificatin Name and address f exprter, packer and/r dispatcher. Name f the variety (where apprpriate). 6.2.3 Origin f Prduce Cuntry f rigin and, ptinally, district where grwn r natinal, reginal r lcal place name. 6.2.4 Cmmercial Identificatin Class; Size (if sized) expressed in accrdance with any ne f the fllwing methds: 1 Fr the purpses f this Standard, this includes recycled material f fd-grade quality. 2 The natinal legislatin f a number f cuntries requires the explicit declaratin f the name and address. Hwever, in the case where a cde mark is used, the reference packer and/r dispatcher (r equivalent abbreviatins) has t be indicated in clse cnnectin with the cde mark.

CONTAMINANTS 7.1 The prduce cvered by this Standard shall cmply with the maximum levels f the General Standard fr Cntaminants and Txins in Fd and Feed (CODEX STAN 193-1995). 7.2 The prduce cvered by this Standard shall cmply with the maximum residue limits fr pesticides established by the Cdex Alimentarius Cmmissin. 8. HYGIENE 8.1 It is recmmended that the prduce cvered by the prvisins f this Standard be prepared and handled in accrdance with the apprpriate sectins f the Cde f Practice General Principles f Fd Hygiene (CAC/RCP 1-1969), Cde f Hygienic Practice fr Fresh Fruits and Vegetables (CAC/RCP 53-2003), and ther relevant Cdex texts such as Cdes f Hygienic Practice and Cdes f Practice. 8.2 The prduce shuld cmply with any micrbilgical criteria established in accrdance with the Principles fr the Establishment and Applicatin f Micrbilgical Criteria fr Fds (CAC/GL 21-1997).
