Course Overview and Statement of Need: This course will bring athletic trainers the latest information on a variety of contemporary sports medicine topics. The program is unique in that it will demonstrate the connectivity between medicine and science. It is now evident that athletes, their parents and their coaches want sound medical advice based on science. This symposium is specifically designed to provide athletic trainers the tools needed to keep teams healthy and in the game. The symposium will cover: Monitoring Athletes For injury prevention and performance, Managing and Treating Patella Dislocations, The Psychology of Coping with Injury, Low Back and Hip Diagnosis and Manual Treatment, Intergrading Core Strengthening in Extremity Rehabilitation, Linking the Thoracic Spine to Injuries in the Overhead Athlete, Hip Dissection, Low Back and Hip Diagnosis and Manual Treatment, Failed Load Transfer, The Effect of Age and Gender on Concussion Recovery, The Application of ImPact Testing in Concussion Management, and The Anemic Athlete.
Course Objectives (Science, not snake oil): 1. Provide a scientific basis for the management of a variety of sports related injuries. 2. Develop a concept of the athletic trainer s role on a Sports Medicine Team. 3. Provide the most up to date information on other contemporary topics. Learning Objectives: - Describe surgical and non-surgical treatment options for first time and repeat patella dislocations. - Describe the emotional ramifications of injury. - Identify warning signs that would necessitate an athlete need a psychological referral. - Recommend communication strategies to support athletes coping with injury. - Outline simple athlete monitoring tools for preventing injury and improving sports performance. - Outline proper administration on the ImPACT test, Interpret ImPACT clinical reports, explain the effect of learning disabilities and other special circumstance surrounding the Impact Test, Identify Additional tool to use with ImPACT. - Demonstrate commonly utilized treatments for lumbopelvic complex problems. - Demonstrate manual techniques to evaluate lumbopelvic complex in an athlete. - Explain the role of age and gender on concussion recovery. - Demonstrate proximal kinetic chain exercises that have been proven to decrease chances of injury or re-injury to distal extremities. - Identify balance issues and perturbation of distal segments of the body and how they relate to core stability. - Identify evidence that core conditioning should be utilized to reduce injuries to the distal extremities - Identify evidence for the use of core stability exercise when rehabilitating lower extremity injuries. - Identify evidence for the use of core stability exercises when rehabilitating upper extremity injuries. - Demonstrate testing tools that have been proven to identify different musculature weakness that correlate to inefficient movement that can lead to injuries further down the distal kinetic chain. - Describe and explain the physiological effect of anemia on performance. - Describe the link between thoracic spine dysfunction and injuries in the overhead athlete. - Identify hip and pelvis anatomical structures and landmarks as they relate to athletic injuries - Discuss the functional movements associated with the hip joint.
