Abilene, TX Along These Lines... Greetings. I love springtime. To me, it.represents new birth. Flowers display an array of colors. People burst forth out of hibernation. Trees begin to bloom, the air is crisp and fresh. It s just a great time to be alive! I am excited to begin our Ending the Silence program. I ve completed my 4- week Bootcamp Training and we ve received the first installment of our Tipper Gore Expansion Grant funds. We ve identified six (6) Presenters for the Program who have begun their Online Training after which they will begin their Inperson Training followed by the final Exam. Our goal is to at least schedule two (2) School presentations prior to the end of the current school year. There are three different Presentations for Ending the Silence. One for Students, another for School Staff and another for Families and Caregivers. We re also busy preparing to present a full proposal in conjunction with NAMI Texas to the HOGG Foundation. Our initial Letter of Interest was approved so we re now moving full steam ahead in anticipation of great things for Taylor County and Mental Health. On April 11th, we presented our proposal for the establishment of a Mental Health Clubhouse May is Mental Health Awareness Month: Go GREEN. Observation will call on Americans to become inspired, informed, involved. NAMI will raise awareness about mental illness and call on Americans to be Into Mental Health Also Please support ABILENE GIVES 2018. Page 2 HOSA Brownwood is recipient of fundraising efforts of the HOSA chapter at the Brownwood ISD school in Brownwood, Texas, who recently sponsored a fundraising event. is no stranger to HOSA as it has been a partner also with the group at the Abilene ISD campus located at Hardin Simmons University the Holland Medical High School. HOSA, future health professionals, whose name used to be an acronym for We focus on partnerships.. 2018 testing against an estimated 1100 other competitors in the Healthcare Current Events category and has qualified for Nationals. In 2016 HOSA announced the 2016-18 National Service Project (selected by the 2016 Voting Delegates) is the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). Health Occupation Students of America, is an international career and technical student organization endorsed by the U.S. Department of Education Brownwood High School HOSA has competed in several State Competitions, We salute their efforts and commend them for their passion. It is our hope that as they pursue their profession they think of those affected by mental illness. HOSA Abilene Fundraiser: A Success!!! On Saturday evening, May 23rd, Byl was hosted by the Abilene ISD chapter of HOSA to Movie Night which was another fundraiser the group sponsored. Popcorn, candy, soda s, the works. It was a great time. The chairperson, Tina, who extended a personal invitation to our President was all smiles as her family came to support her efforts. Quite frankly, I ll miss their support added Byl. HOSA s support has been so important to us as we are still a new and emerging Affiliate and as with any start-up, finances are scarce, he added. FY18 Funding signals Greater Investment Services for Individuals with Mental Illness & Families March 22, 2018. Following the release of the Fiscal Year (FY) 2018 federal appropriations package, NAMI is extremely grateful for the increased investments in mental health services and supports. By including significant funding increases for these for these programs, Congress has taken a crucial step to support individuals with mental illness and their families. The bill substantially boosts several of NAMI s key priorities. We welcome people living with a mental illness, their family members and friends, and mental health professionals to get involved with activities.
