DS PERFORMANCE GROUP Individuals Teams Organizations PERSONAL OPERATING MANUAL Personality Relationship Style Behavioral Style Conflict Style A self-study guide that takes individuals on an introspective journey through self, identifying and analyzing behavioral patterns that are driven by personality and style.

OVERVIEW Personal Operating Manual is an introspective and interactive process designed to increase participant understanding of self and develop versatility in behaviors. Understanding self is a critical first step in the process of creating Personal Effectiveness. Individuals who do not understand self often become captives of their own personality and style. They want the situation to adjust to them, rather than adjusting their behaviors to the situation. When the inability of an individual to adjust behaviors to a situation consistently causes performance problems, others will tend to view the individual as being "selfcentered" or "ego-centric." Eventually the individual is labeled as "high maintenance" and "difficult to work with," which usually leads to highly emotional and personal conflicts as tensions build in relationships. POM takes participants through a process of identifying and analyzing the behavioral patterns that are driven by their personality and style. Each pattern is examined for strengths and weaknesses in the various work situations that a participant experiences. This process teaches individuals how to take "jurisdiction" over their behaviors and increases the "choices" they have to improve their performance in specific situations. The POM Self-Study Workbook includes four self-assessment instruments: MBTI STEP II FORM Q The MBTI is a self-assessment of personality type base on Jungian psychology. Personality "preference" is how you would prefer to behave regardless of the nature of a given situation. FIRO-B The FIRO-B is a self-assessment of interpersonal relationship style and is based on the work of Will Schutz. The FIRO-B examines your interpersonal needs for Inclusion, Control, and Affection. PERSONAL PROFILE SYSTEM (DISC) 2.0 The DISC Profile is a self-assessment of situation-specific behaviors for example, how you behave at work vs. how you behave at home. This is a behaviorally anchored instrument, which means that it can generate different results for different situations. THOMAS-KILMANN CONFLICT MODE (TK) TK is designed to assess an individual's behavior in conflict situations, that is, situations in which the concerns of two people appear to be incompatible. TK identifies five conflict styles and stresses that each style can be appropriate depending on the situation. Personal Operating Manual 2

WORKBOOK DESIGN The POM Self-Study workbook is organized into five sections. The first section provides an overview of the learning process and tools used in the workbook. It prepares the user to gain the maximum learning from the process. The four remaining sections each focus on one of the four instruments included in the POM. Each section has the same general design, but the specific activities vary with each instrument. SECTION OUTLINE 1. Overview of Instrument - This section of the workbook provides a brief overview of the theory base and design of the self-assessment instrument that the module is based on. It includes information on scales and sub-scales as well as suggestions on how to interpret the results of the instrument. 2. Accurate Assessment - This section of the workbook takes participants through an analytical process to "validate" those aspects of their interpretive report that they believe are accurate and those that they believe are not accurate. a. Scales - This section provides an overview of the scales of the instrument and takes participants through a process of creating an accurate description of themselves on each scale. b. Sub-scales - This section provides an overview of the sub-scales (if any) of the instrument and takes participants through a process of creating an accurate description of themselves on each sub-scale. c. Strengths, Weaknesses, Behavioral Tendencies - Participants interpret their analysis by creating an accurate assessment of what they believe to be their strengths, weaknesses, and behavioral tendencies. 3. Presentation of Self a. Self-Esteem - What do I like about me? In this section individuals examine how their style has developed over time and what aspects of "self" do they take most pleasure in. b. Self-Disclosure - What do others need to know? In this section individuals identify what other people need to know about Personal Operating Manual 3

working and interacting with them. This can range from small idiosyncrasies to major hot buttons. c. Acceptance - What do I have most difficulty accepting in others? In this section participants analyze styles that are opposite from them to identify those aspects of different styles they have the most difficulty accepting in others. 4. Situational Analysis a. Work Situations Where Personality or Style is Enabling Performance. In this section participants identify the work situations where they believe their style has contributed to their performance and their success. b. Work Situations Where Personality or Style is Inhibiting Performance. In this section participants identify work situations where their style has caused performance problems. Users then analyze the "price" of these lower performing behaviors and what higher performing alternative behaviors exist. c. Higher Performing Behaviors. This section involves action planning to identify new behaviors individuals want to try at work to increase their performance. d. Similarities/Differences and Impact This is an optional relationship building activity for individuals who wish to share their self-analysis with others. Personal Operating Manual 4

INSTRUMENTATION MYERS-BRIGGS TYPE INDICATOR STEP II FORM Q The MBTI is a self-assessment of personality type base on Jungian psychology. Personality "preference" is how you would prefer to behave regardless of the nature of a given situation. The MBTI has four scales: 1. Extrovert Introvert: This scale looks at how you gain energy. 2. Sensing Intuition: This scale looks at how you gather or become aware of information. 3. Thinking Feeling: This scale looks at how you decide or come to conclusions about that information. 4. Judging Perceiving: This scale looks at how you deal with the world around you. In the POM, we utilize the MBTI STEP II, Form Q instrument. The Interpretive Report provides information on five different facets for each MBTI Scale. The Report also includes applications to Communicating, Making Decisions, Managing Change, and Managing Conflict. FUNDAMENTAL INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIP ORIENTATION The FIRO-B is a self-assessment of interpersonal relationship style and is based on the work of Will Schutz. The FIRO-B examines your interpersonal needs for Inclusion, Control, and Affection. It also looks at the degree to which you initiate action and the degree to which you rely on others to initiate action. General Scales 1. Your Individual Needs Estimates of how much of each interpersonal dimension is characteristic of you. 2. Your Overall Interpersonal Needs The total of all six individual needs represents the overall strength of your interpersonal needs. 3. Total Expressed and Total Wanted Behaviors How often you initiate relationship behaviors. 4. Total Need Reflects the overall strength of each need, or how much you seek to satisfy each of these needs in interpersonal situations. Sub-Scales 1. Inclusion Forming new relationships and associating with others. 2. Control Decision making, influence, and persuasion of others. Degree of Power. 3. Affection Emotional ties and extent of closeness with others. Personal Operating Manual 5

PERSONAL PROFILE SYSTEM (DISC) The DISC Profile is a self-assessment of situation-specific behaviors for example, how you behave at work vs. how you behave at home. This is a behaviorally anchored instrument, which means that it can generate different results for different situations. The DISC has two Scales that generate four Dimensions and 18 "Classic Patterns." DISC DIMENSIONS 1. Dominance Emphasis on shaping the environment by overcoming opposition to accomplishing results. 2. Influence Emphasis on shaping the environment by influencing or persuading others. 3. Steadiness Emphasis on cooperating with others to carry out the task. 4. Conscientiousness Emphasis on working conscientiously within existing circumstances to ensure quality and accuracy. TK has two scales. Assertiveness is the extent to which the individual attempts to satisfy his or her own needs and concerns. Cooperativeness is the extent to which the individual attempts to satisfy the other person's concerns. The five TK styles are: 1. Competing Assertive and uncooperative, a power-oriented mode. 2. Accommodating Unassertive and cooperative, the opposite of competing. 3. Avoiding Unassertive and uncooperative. 4. Collaborating Both assertive and cooperating, the opposite of Avoiding. 5. Compromising Intermediate in both asserting and cooperating. Personal Operating Manual 6
