State of Tennessee Department of State Tennessee State Library and Archives 403 Seventh Avenue North Nashville, Tennessee 37243-0312 COMMISSION ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN RECORDS, 1972-1981 RECORD GROUP 181 Processed by Mary C. Barnes Completed June 18, 1991 Audio/video location: I-A-5v

SCOPE AND CONTENT Record Group 181, Commission on the Status of Women Records, spans the period 1972-1981. The records contain Commission files (board meeting minutes and activities) and financial documents, (audits, budget proposals, and invoices), Commission members personal files, information on workshops and conferences, correspondence, film and audio tapes of Commission activities, legislation relating to Commission interests, media files (press releases, radio shows and newspaper clippings), and files on women s issues (abortion, day care, and displaced homemakers). The Commission on the Status of Women was set up in February 1973 by an executive order of Governor Winfield Dunn. The order created a governmental commission charged with the responsibility of developing recommendations which would insure that women were afforded equal opportunities for full participation in the life of Tennessee. The Commission became statutory on January 1, 1974 when the legislature passed a bill originally introduced by Rep. Gwen Fleming. The Commission was composed of twelve members, appointed by the Governor, four men and eight women. They were represented geographically in such areas as age, economic levels, employment, political affiliation and minority groups. The Commission was designed to work for the best interest of all women, both homemakers not employed outside the home and women in the employment market. Some of the duties of the Commission were to conduct studies and help with conferences in cooperation with state and local women s business, professional and civic organizations. The Commission also advised the Governor and state legislators as to the status of women in employment policies, practices, educational needs, political and civil rights, domestic relations and recommended new and expanded services. As a result of Sunset Legislation, the Commission on the Status of Women was discontinued June 30, 1981. The collection is arranged chronologically.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE FOR AUDIO/VIDEO MATERIALS These records contain a number of audio or video/visual items, including audiocassettes, slides and a small amount of videotape. The audiotapes consist mainly of commission meeting recordings. The slides consist of some titled slide-show presentations and various slides depicting commission members. The videotapes appear to be public service announcements of Commission activities. The container list has a full listing of all audio/video materials in the records. To remain consistent with the original order of processing, the audio/video materials will remain as series 6 of the records, beginning with box 6A. When processing this portion of the records, the audiotapes were found to be in very poor condition. New master tapes were created of all tapes. These are housed in Boxes 6A - 6E. Slides are in good condition. They are organized by slide-show title when it could be determined. Otherwise, they are simply referred to as miscellaneous slides. The unidentified slides are housed in Boxes 6F - 6M. Videotapes are of broadcast quality, 2-inch-wide videotape. Presently, no equipment exists at the State Library and Archives to play these tapes, however the tapes do appear to be in good condition. These tapes are housed in Box 6N. These audio/video materials are located in a climate-controlled vault; a 24-hour acclimation period is needed before working with audio or video tapes.
