J o h n F. K e n n e d y S c h o o l Friday, March 2, 2018 Volume 2017-2018, Issue 23 In this issue: From the Hawk s Nest! JFK Doing Good! Look for the Good! Dear JFK Families, JFK School Dismissal Procedures UPDATE In an effort to keep our students and families safe in our school parking lot during dismissal, some changes need to take place. Effective immediately: Vehicles must be parked in designated parking spots in the front lot. There is NO PARKING from the second crosswalk to the stop sign at the end of the driveway. This includes the curve in front of the fire hydrant. Cars parked in this stretch of the driveway block the exit, the fire hydrant, and create a major safety concern in the event of an emergency. There will be cones placed to remind drivers that these are not designated parking spaces. Reminders: Dogs and animals are not allowed on the school property. If you are utilizing the playground after school, please be sure you have parked in a parking spot. Please use caution in the parking lot. Slow down and help keep our students and families be safe! Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our students and families safe. JFK Doing Good! Back in the fall JFK students sent care packages with candy and cards to Mrs. Loris s brother and his squadron stationed overseas. Please read his thank you message below! Dear Mrs. Loris s Class, Mrs. Aspinwall's Class & John F. Kennedy Elementary School, Thank you very much for the Veteran's Day Care Package that we just received today in the mail. Packages here take a long time to arrive but it was a very welcome and appreciated gift for the men and women of the 612th Air Base Squadron here in Honduras. As you can see from the photos attached, you have already brought smiles, laughs, and raised the spirits of a handful of members that have already read your cards and chowed down on some candy. The rest of the cards and candy you provided will be spread and enjoyed by 143 members in our unit. We are a very diverse squadron and have every job from fire fighters to vehicle drivers to air traffic controllers to meteorologists that all appreciate the love and care you have shown us. Thank you again for thinking about us and all Veterans around the world! PS. Special thanks to Evan, Summer, and Olivia for the cards and poem that I now personally have hanging up in my office. V/R, Captain Ricci MICHAEL A. RICCI, Capt, USAF Logistics Flight Commander
Look for the Good Kindness & Gratitude Campaign On Monday, March 5th, John F. Kennedy School will begin a two week, school -wide gratitude campaign. We will Look for the Good in ourselves, each other, and our world. Together, we will practice kindness and gratitude. What Look for the Good entails The JFK Student Leadership Team members will kick off the campaign with an assembly to explain what it means to Look for the Good. This will share... You Matter Cards- Your student may share with you that they received a You Matter Card from someone at school. These cards say Thank you for being an AWESOME HUMAN! The person giving you this card really appreciates something you did. Please pass this on when you see the good too! Gratitude Wall & Gratitude Spots- Once daily staff and students will share what they are grateful for and post it on our Gratitude Walls to inspire kindness around our school. Students will be encouraged to stand on the Gratitude Spots found around the building to consider what they are grateful for in that moment. You Matter Letters - Students will complete You Matter Letters and/or artwork. Students are asked to read the letter aloud to (or share their artwork with) the person they choose. Letters WILL NOT be read aloud in class. These are personal and private letters from students to the person of their choice. During the week of March 19th, students will be encouraged to share the experience of writing and reading their You Matter Letters with their classmates and teachers. We hope this project will inspire gratitude and kindness in our school community. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the gratitude project, please contact Mrs. Etense.
JFK SCREEN FREE WEEK Dear JFK Families: We are holding our JFK Screen Free Week starting Monday, March 5th and finishing Sunday, March 11th. We have some things planned for this week to encourage our children to participate in Screen Free Activities. We are providing each student with a Screen Free Week Activity Log. Every student that returns a log signed by their parent/guardian to school starting Monday, March 12th to Wednesday, March 14th will be entered into a drawing for a prize. The winners of the Screen Free Week drawing will be announced on Friday, March 16th. Some of the activities we have planned for Screen Free Week are: Tuesday, March 6th - Family Gratitude Night, held 6:00-7:00 pm in the JFK Gym. This is an event for the whole family, it is not a drop-off event. There is no cost and no registration required. We will have various activities for families to participate in along with a Family Photo Opportunity. We want children to express what they are grateful for and why - this is a great family activity night! Thursday, March 8th - JFK Launch Playdate, held 2:00-6:30 pm at Launch, 125 Old Gate Lane, Milford. The kids have no school on this day - join fellow JFK families and jump away at Launch for a few hours. Saturday, March 10th - Sound Tigers ComiConn, held 7:30pm at Webster Bank Arena. Join your JFK friends while enjoying JFK Night with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers! Thank you for encouraging your children to engage in activities other than ones with screens for this week! We can t wait to hear about all the fun things the students were able to participate in throughout Screen Free Week. Sincerely, The JFK PTO
